DON'T JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER
Don't Underestimate The People With Great Faith By Their Background.
There is a clear and sobering irony that unfolds Matthew 15
At the beginning of the chapter, Pharisees and scribes came from Jerusalem to question Jesus (Matthew 15:1).
For context, Jerusalem was the religious center of Israel. It was the city where the temple stands. It was the place where the Scriptures were studied, guarded, and taught.
IF ANYWHERE SHOULD HAVE RECOGNIZED THE MESSIAH, IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN IN JERUSALEM.
Butt in verses 3-9, JESUS EXPOSED THEIR MISPLACED PRIORITIES. They were concerned about ritual handwashing and tradition, but THEIR HEARTS WERE FAR FROM GOD.
He quoted Isaiah and said,
“THIS PEOPLE HONORS ME WITH THEIR LIPS, BUT THEIR HEART IS FAR FROM ME” (Isaiah 15:8).
Those closest to the covenant promises
were resisting the One to whom
those promises pointed to, Jesus.
Then in verse 21, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon, it is a Gentile territory.
And there, a Canaanite woman came out crying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David” (Matthew 15:22).
This is the irony here, Jerusalem, which had the Scriptures and the temple, was questioning and resisting Jesus, while A GENTILE WOMAN, SOMEONE WHO IS OUTSIDE THE COVENANT CENTER, WAS PLEADING FOR HIS MERCY AND CONFESSING HIS AUTHORITY.
THE RELIGIOUS LEADERS DEBATED HIM.
WHILE THE CANAANITE WOMAN BEGGED HIM. THOSE TRAINED IN THE LAW TESTED HIM. WHILE THE CANAANITE WOMAN TRUSTED HIM.
She even ADDRESSED HIM as
“LORD, SON OF DAVID” (Matthew 15:22),
a title rooted in Israel’s messianic hope.
It is striking that A CANAANITE WOMAN
USED LANGUAGE THAT MANY IN JERUSALEM WERE UNWILLING TO AFFIRM ABOUT JESUS.
Even when Jesus did not answer her
immediately (Matthew 15:23), she did not withdraw.
Even when He stated that HE WAS SENT
TO THE LOST SHEEP OF ISRAEL (Matthew 15:24), She Knelt Before Him and said,
“LORD, HELP ME” (Matthew 15:25).
Even when He spoke of the children’s bread
and the dogs (15:26), SHE RESPONDED
WITH HUMILITY AND CONFIDENCE,
“Yes, Lord, yet EVEN THE DOGS
eat the crumbs that fall from
their masters’ table” (15:27).
She accepted the order of God’s redemptive plan. She did not argue entitlement. But she believed that His mercy overflows beyond boundaries.
In verse 28, Jesus declared,
“O WOMAN, GREAT IS YOUR FAITH.”
Interestingly, in Matthew’s Gospel, some of the clearest commendations of faith came from Gentiles, such as the centurion in Matthew 8 and this woman in Matthew 15.
The PATTERN IS DIFFICULT TO IGNORE.
What irony was this? Those who possessed religious privilege often failed to recognize Him. While those who stood outside the privilege sometimes recognized Him most clearly and wholeheartedly.
Proximity to sacred structures did not guarantee faith. Jerusalem had exposure to revelation all the time. The Canaanite woman HAD DESPERATION AND TRUST.
And yet, in that moment, DESPERATION JOINED WITH TRUST PROVED TO BE TRUER FAITH THAN RELIGIOUS PROXIMITY.
It is possible to attend church, to know Christian language, and to be familiar with Scripture, yet slowly grow resistant in heart.
We may analyze sermons, discuss theology,
and defend positions, while losing the simple posture of “Lord, help me.”
The Canaanite woman reminds us that TRUE FAITH IS NOT MEASURED BY HOW CLOSE WE STAND TO RELIGIOUS ACTIVITY, BUT BY WHETHER WE GENUINELY RECOGNIZE OUR NEED AND BELIEVE IN CHRIST’S MERCY.
Her example invites us to EXAMINE
whether OUR FAMILIARITY with sacred things has softened us toward Jesus or made us merely accustomed to Him.
