A Generous Offer

March 2nd, 2026

The oldest treaty ever signed by the United States is the 1783 Treaty of Paris. It ended the American Revolution and established the United States as free sovereign and independent states. On September 3, representatives from the British Empire and the United States signed a document that set very generous boundaries for the latter.

America’s allies, France and Spain, hoped the United States would be a small and weak nation, so the American negotiating team, led by John Jay, Benjamin Franklin, and John Adams, dealt directly with London. Instead of receiving a small parcel of land between the Atlantic and the Appalachians, the British gave the new state all the land up to the Mississippi River— including fishing rights in Canada. This enabled the United States to grow westward and eventually become a major continental power.

The Bible often referred to covenants, most often describing a formal relationship agreement between God and Israel (e.g., see Exodus 19:3–6). What’s impressive about the different covenants in Scripture—which theologians love to debate—is the fact that God keeps making conditional agreements with humanity even after they are repeatedly broken. Instead of throwing His mighty hands up in the air, the Lord keeps pursuing His people.

Covenants demonstrate God’s deep love and His interest in lost souls; they show how eager the Lord is to redeem and have a lasting relationship with His children. His covenant with Noah reveals a personal God who cares about the welfare of people. His covenant with Israel as a nation was to promise to bless them if they would obey Him.

While the “old” covenant was with the nation of Israel, God’s “new” covenant is offered to individual believers in Christ. We see this clearly expressed in Hebrews 8:8–11, where the provisions and conditions of both are the same. But the choice to become a new person is up to you.

Apply It:

Have you accepted God’s generous offer of salvation? He promises to bless you if you humbly seek Him.
