The Sugar Ant and the Elephant

“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” Matthew 11:28–29

Do you struggle to walk in obedience to the Lord? Gritting your teeth, you try ever harder; then someone suggests you need to surrender—conjuring up images of control—and a shiver goes up your spine. Relax! God is love. He does not operate in the arena of control. After all, He is the one who bestowed freewill upon you. “Surrender” is merely “Christianease” for letting God love you and lead you, as you yield to His will and walk in His power.

I struggled for years to surrender, not recognizing the only way I can truly yield to the Lord is to be yoked to Him and draw on His power. God changed my perspective one day as I wrestled with Him in prayer.

“Please, Lord, show me how to walk in surrender as Jesus walked. I will not let you go unless you bless me with a changed character! Cause me to follow in Christ’s footsteps!”

Instantly, in my mind, I saw a gigantic elephant. Next to him was a tiny little sugar ant, hardly visible. What does this mean? I wondered.

Suddenly, I was impressed with a divine thought. Shelley, the greatest strength you can muster is like that of the tiny ant. Whereas My power is—by comparison—like that of the elephant. Why would you want to walk in your limited human strength, when I make My power available to you? When I ask you to surrender, child, I am asking you to accept My power.

Galatians 3:3 came to my remembrance, “Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the flesh?” Yes, I had been so foolish. Trying my utmost to walk with God, I had been drawing only on my own sugar-ant strength. It was like that tiny insect trying to roll a boulder up a hill!

To be yoked to Christ is to be yoked to that elephantine power of the Holy Spirit. In your mind’s eye, think of the image of that sugar ant yoked to the elephant. Who is carrying the load? Can you see that tiny little ant—with his tiny little legs squirming about, high off the ground—demanding to be released so he could perform the task of rolling the boulder on his own? How often have we insisted on having our own way and reaped the exhausting and empty results?

Each morning, we face a decision which determines whether we walk as a pitiful or a powerful Christian that day. If we attempt to perfect our walk by the strength of our flesh, we are to be pitied as we limp along hobbled by self-destructive habits. If we choose to be filled with the Holy Spirit, we will be yoked to Christ, and a life of obedience will be our joy. We will find rest for our souls.
