DAILY STRENGTH FOR MEN
February 28 (day 1)
A PART OF THE PLAN
The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge, ma savior.
2 Samuel 22:2-3 NRSV
David was too old to face Philistine giants.
As a teenager, he had kill Goliath by slinging a rock into his forehead. Now David was in his sixties and had served as Israel's king for over thirty years. Israel was still at war with the Philistinres, and in four successive battles the Philistine had a giant on their side..
In the first, the giant saw that David had grown weary and raced to kill him. Leaping to the aid of his king, Abishai attacked and killed the Philistine. Concerned about their king's safety; David's men put him on the sidelines and proceeded to win the next three battles, killing a giant in each.
After the battles were won, David sang the song recorded in 2 Samuel 22. In the song's opening, David called God his rock, fortress, deliverer, source of refuge, shield, salvation's horm, stronghold, and savior. But it was David's men who save the life of their king, by coming to his aid on the battlefield and then persuadingin him to let him handle the fighting. All during David's reign there were many individuals who came to the aid of their king, in every area of David's life. Was David ignoring their efforts by directing all his praise to God?
No. God had chosen David as Israel's king. By protecting and helping David, the people were serving and honoring God. They were doing God's will. When David's praised God, he also praised thos ho served God along they way.
God is your rock, fortress, and deliverer. Sometimes he helps you through the efforts of those who obey him and sometimes you get to be a part of his helping others.
