I was recently diagnosed with cataracts.
But before I knew what they were, I thought God had given me a gift.
Every time I looked at a light, I saw the most intense, vibrant rainbows surrounding it. The colours were breathtaking. So alive. So beautiful. I honestly thought I had been given the ability to see something others couldn’t.
Then I was told the rainbows were not normal. They were a symptom. A problem.
At first, I felt disappointed. What I thought was a gift was actually a limitation.
But even in that, God began to speak.
I learned something about light. White light carries all the colours within it. Under the right conditions, what looks plain and singular reveals a spectrum of breathtaking beauty. Coloured lights don’t do the same but white light does. There is more within it than the eye normally sees.
And it made me think about God.
So many people see only the “white light” the surface. They see rules. Structure. Religion. Words on a page. But there is so much more contained within Him than what first meets the eye.
There is depth.
There is colour.
There is brilliance.
There is beauty layered within beauty.
To see beyond the surface requires time. Availability. Sitting in His presence. When you linger long enough, He gives you eyes that see differently. You begin to hear His voice more clearly. You start to understand His heart. The God who once seemed distant or defined by doctrine alone becomes radiant and alive.
Scripture gives us a glimpse of this reality
“And he who sat there had the appearance of jasper and carnelian, and around the throne was a rainbow that had the appearance of an emerald.” Revelation 4:3
Even heaven describes Him in colour and light.
The rainbows I see around natural light are beautiful but the God beyond the surface is spectacular. He is not merely a book of rules. He is layered glory. He is holy brilliance. He is beauty that unfolds the longer you look.
As much as I once wished others could see the rainbows I see when I look at light, even more I want them to see beyond the surface to my God the One who shines with the fullness of every colour, every promise, every dimension of glory.
There is more.
And when you find it, you will never be sorry.
