Chapter 67 Death and Resurrection

Revelation 20:5, 6 mention a first resurrection and a second death without mentioning a first death and a second resurrection:

5 But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.
6 Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.

Death and resurrection are mentioned in the context of the Millennium. The first resurrection is before the Millenium. The impenitent dead are not resurrected at the beginning of the Millennium at the Second Advent. The impenitent, by implication, will be resurrected after the Millennium.

Preceding a resurrection must be death, a death that is not permanent, because resurrection brings an end to death. By implication the temporary death is the first death. The second death has grave consequences. The second death has no power over those that are resurrected at the first resurrection. These are blessed and holy. Therefore, the second death is for those that are not blessed and holy.

The second death is final. There is no resurrection from the second death. It is a final separation from God. It is the wages of sin (Rom 6:23). All of us deserve the second death. We are born into it because we inherit it from our parents. Christ came and saved us from the second death, bringing us eternal life.

The first resurrection is before the Millennium at the Second Advent, corporately. However, the 144 000 experience the first resurrection before the Close of Probation. Moses also experienced the first resurrection before the Transfiguration. The first resurrection is therefore not necessarily associated with a point in time, but rather with the consequences it brings – eternal life.

The second resurrection is after the Millennium, and all those that experience this resurrection are brought to life for judgement. Every human that ever lived on Earth will be present after the second resurrection, and God will be vindicated as righteous and fair. Every impenitent soul will acknowledge God as good, righteous and just. Thereafter the impenitent will experience the second death in the purging hellfire, including Satan and his angels.

There is also a special resurrection somewhere before the Second Advent of Christ. Some leading righteous will be resurrected to see and be a part of the final events on Earth. Some of the most vocal and leaders among the impenitent will be resurrected to see the vindication of Christ at the Second Advent. Christ told Caiaphas that he would see Him return to Earth at the Second Advent as King of kings:

Matt 26:63 But Jesus held his peace, And the high priest answered and said unto him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God.
64 Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.

Christ’s enemies that are resurrected at this special resurrection will die again at the Second Advent, just to be resurrected a second time at the second resurrection. Revelation also indicates that those that crucified Christ will see Him coming in the clouds of heaven:

Rev 1:7 Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.

Finally, let us focus on the death and resurrection of Christ. Christ died our second death on the cross on our behalf so that we may have the gift of eternal life. It was a death of what seemed to be eternal separation from the Father. We see this in His cry on the cross:

Matt 27:46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

Three days later He was resurrected with the first resurrection. His resurrection opened the first resurrection for all of us. New life for Him has gifted new life to us. We live today in the hope of eternal life because of His second death and first resurrection.

Don’t waste Christ’s death and resurrection on your behalf. Accept the gift of eternal life from the Father through and by His Son. God bless.
