Dear Father,

Daily, I listen to Seasons by Hillsong. I am particularly drawn to this song because of its powerful lyrics. A part says, “Like a frost on a rose, winter comes for us all.” The season when the sun is at its lowest, when productivity seems far-fetched; when questions go unanswered and life unfolds without meaning; when strength seems to embrace weakness, and weakness--adversity.

In his Proverbs, King Solomon says, “If thou faint in the day of adversity, thy strength is small.” This passage enforces two constant facts: there is a day of adversity, and it requires great strength. During meditation, I noted that “Strength demonstrated in the day of adversity isn’t strength built on the day of adversity.” This is a concept whose rule often stands at the risk of memorization rather than implementation--seeing that the natural man rarely has measures in place to build strength for the day of adversity.

It isn’t unlikely that there are men who live as though life operates on a just-in-time system; where prayer becomes an instrument for satisfying immediate needs rather than a lifestyle, and there are hardly any plans to mitigate against future uncertainties; where we seek solutions only when we face problems. Isn’t this why we faint in the day of adversity? Because we have made no plans for the day of adversity.

Father, teach us how to build strength before when it will be needed, and help us to see that faith is born from fellowship.
