God Hears Our Prayers

“I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in Him I will trust.’” Psalm 91:2
I grew up in a wonderful family and married a local boy who was very kind. But he was generous to a fault, sometimes even neglecting our own family’s needs. One day, he suffered serious burns in an industrial accident but survived. Desperate for healing, we watched a popular Russian psychic who was reportedly healing masses of people through their TV sets. Taken in by it all, my husband miraculously recovered and then started believing that God had given him the gift of healing, too.
Sadly, I didn’t know that people could be healed by evil powers, too, and soon my husband’s “healing” turned into a big problem. Leaving his job, he spent all his time “healing” others, leaving our family in dire financial straits.
It was desperation that drove me to prayer. Once, when we had nothing to eat, I went out on our small balcony where no one could hear and cried, “Lord, I can’t feed my children. Please do something!” Later that day, a neighbor from the sixth floor came to see me, bringing two cans of soup and a casserole. We hadn’t had that much food for a long time! She began bringing leftovers from lunch, but my husband put a stop to that. He was proud of his gift but wouldn’t take care of his own family. All his love and kindness disappeared. His gift was not from God because it had changed his character completely.
An evangelist began holding a series of meetings in our city, so my sister and my daughter and I began attending. Through what I learned, my understanding of the God I’d prayed to in difficult times changed, and He became my Friend. I turned to Him every day, and I fell in love with Him.
I have so many stories about answered prayer. Soon after we were baptized, my daughter entered a Christian Academy, but I had difficulty paying her tuition. I prayed about it a lot with fellow believers, and amazingly, God reassured me through a dream that someone would pay for her education. Sure enough. Just hours before the deadline, one of our church friends offered to pay for her entire year!
God answers desperate prayers, too. One night, as I left work, I realized the buses weren’t running, and some drunken men approached me with clearly bad intentions. Silently, I began praying and reciting a Bible verse from Psalm 91, “Because you have made the Lord… your dwelling place, no evil shall befall you,” and out of nowhere, a taxi driver pulled up and told me to get in the car. I did, but out of excitement and fear, I never told him where to take me. So imagine my surprise when he drove up to my house! I tried to pay him, but he said, “I won’t take anything from you. Just don’t walk so late at night anymore. God bless you.” Truly, he was a messenger from God!
I often talk to my neighbors about God, and one of them needed eye surgery to keep from going blind. However, she didn’t have the money and couldn’t get a loan for the full amount. I offered to pray with her, but at first, she refused. She asked her son, her relatives, and friends for money but got nothing. Finally, she accepted my offer, and the next day, she felt impressed to go back to the bank that had previously approved a very small loan. Imagine her surprise when she walked out with the full amount!
We thanked God for providing, and then I told her, “We become upset if our children don’t call us for a long time and wonder why they don’t seem interested in us anymore. So I imagine how God feels when we only talk to Him when we need something.” God loves each of us very much, and He will always answer our prayers.
