Dear Father,

Jesus identified and spoke against foolishness in several places throughout Scripture. In instances of hypocrisy, misplaced priorities, unbelief, and negligence. However, there is one trait common to every instance: poor judgment. In essence, we can infer that displays of foolishness in any regard often begin with poor judgment.

Our dealings with people make it nearly impossible not to encounter bold displays of foolishness. As annoying as this may be, King Solomon says in his Proverbs, “Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him.” In other words, encountering people who display foolishness is not the problem; being seen as a fool by responding with an equal display of foolishness is--because foolishness is contagious.

We often see people reveal the depth of their foolishness in a bid to display their strength in a fight. Others, by speaking a thousand words (that seem like intelligence) end up exposing their folly. Some who cannot add a breadth to their lives dismiss the idea that there is a God, while others will not lift a finger in alignment with the truth they know from Scripture. The are more examples than can be listed.

Foolishness--no longer an insult, has for many, become a way of life. Yet in contrast stands the wise man: quiet, restrained, controlled, and believing. He does not rush to prove himself, nor does he reveal all that he knows. And in the irony of it all, this is the one whom the foolish often call a fool.
