BE NOT DECEIEVE INTO DISOBEDIENCE
THE PROPHET WHO WAS KILLED BY A LION BECAUSE OF DISOBEDIENCE. 1 Kings 13:1–24
In a time when Israel was drifting away from God, a young prophet from Judah was sent on a dangerous assignment. King Jeroboam had built an altar in Bethel, leading the people into idolatry. But God sent His messenger to confront it boldly.
The prophet stood before the altar and cried out against it, declaring that a future king named Josiah would one day destroy it. As a sign that the message was truly from God, the altar split apart and its ashes poured out.
King Jeroboam stretched out his hand and commanded, “Seize him!” But suddenly, the king’s hand shriveled and became paralyzed. Fear filled the air. The same prophet who spoke judgment now prayed for mercy — and God restored the king’s hand.
GOD HAD GIVEN THE PROPHET STRICT INSTRUCTIONS: Do not eat bread. Do not drink water. Do not return the same way you came. OBEDIENCE WAS PART OF HIS ASSIGNMENT.
As he was leaving, an old prophet from Bethel heard what had happened. He chased after the young man and invited him to come home and eat. The young prophet refused at first, explaining the command God had given him. But THE OLD PROPHET LIED.
He said, “An angel spoke to me and told me to bring you back.”
IT SOUNDED SPIRITUAL. IT SOUNDED CONVINCING. IT SOUNDED LIKE CONFIRMATION.
And THE YOUNG PROPHET BELIEVED HIM.
He returned. He sat at the table. He ate. He drank.
Then SUDDENLY, THE TRUE WORD OF THE LORD CAME — but this time, it came THROUGH THE VERY MAN WHO HAD DECEIVED HIM. Because HE HAD DISOBEYED GOD’S DIRECT INSTRUCTION, he would not be buried with his ancestors.
AFTER HE LEFT, A LION MET HIM ON THE ROAD AND KILLED HIM.
But here is the chilling part: The lion did not eat the body. The donkey he was riding stood beside the corpse. he lion stood there too — as if guarding it.
IT WAS NOT AN ACCIDENT. IT WAS JUDGMENT.
This story is not just about a lion.
IT IS ABOUT OBEDIENCE.
The PROPHET WAS BOLD before a king — but VULNERABLE BEFORE DECEPTION. He WITHSTOOD INTIMIDATION BUT FELL TO PERSUASION. He SURVIVED CONFRONTATION but FAILED IN COMPROMISE.
Not every voice that sounds spiritual is sent by God.
Not every “prophetic word” overrides what God already told you.
When God gives you clear instruction, do not negotiate it. Do not dilute it. Do not adjust it to please people. Because PARTIAL OBEDIENCE IS STILL DISOBEDIENCE.
And SOMETIMES, THE GREATEST DANGER TO OUR CALLING IS NOT PERSECUTION — IT IS DISTRACTION DISGUISED AS REVELATION.
MAY WE BE PEOPLE WHO OBEY COMPLETELY, EVEN WHEN NO ONE IS WATCHING.
