A Sermon on Psalm 143:8: Entrusting Our Lives to God’s Unfailing Love

Author: Will Helton

Beloved friends, let us turn our hearts to the words of King David in Psalm 143:8: “Let me hear in the morning of your steadfast love, for in you I trust. Make me know the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul.” These ancient words, penned in a time of desperation and pursuit, speak directly to our modern souls amidst the chaos of daily life.

Imagine David, the shepherd-king, fleeing from enemies, his spirit weary, yet rising at dawn to seek God’s voice. He doesn’t demand answers or miracles; he pleads for a reminder of God’s chesed—His unfailing, covenant love. This love isn’t fleeting like the morning dew; it’s steadfast, like the sun that rises without fail. David teaches us that true faith begins not in the heat of battle or the peak of success, but in the quiet of the morning, when we attune our ears to hear God’s assurance.

In our own lives, how often do we wake to the clamor of worries—bills, relationships, uncertainties? David shows us a better way: start with trust. “For in you I trust,” he declares. Trust isn’t blind optimism; it’s an active entrusting of our souls to the One who formed them. When we lift our souls to God, we surrender control, acknowledging that our paths are not self-made but divinely guided.

And what does God offer in return? Direction. “Make me know the way I should go.” Not a vague map, but clear guidance through His Word, His Spirit, and His providence. In biblical times, paths through the Judean wilderness were treacherous, filled with pitfalls and predators. So too are our journeys. Yet God illuminates the way, much like the golden rays of sunrise piercing the darkness, symbolizing hope and renewal.

Today, let this psalm challenge us: Will we entrust our lives to God’s unfailing love? In moments of decision—at work, in family, in faith—pause and pray for His direction. Remember, David’s life wasn’t perfect; he stumbled often. But his trust in God turned a fugitive into a king, a sinner into a man after God’s own heart.

May we, like David, rise each morning expectant of God’s love, ready to follow where He leads. For in entrusting our souls to Him, we find not just survival, but abundant life.

A Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, as the morning light breaks forth, let us hear anew of Your unfailing love. In a world of shifting sands, we trust in You alone. Show us the path You have ordained, for to You we lift our souls and entrust our lives. Guide our steps, illuminate our decisions, and fill us with Your peace. In the name of Your Son, Jesus Christ, who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life, we pray. Amen.
