How much are you worth?
Exodus 30:11-16
This week's Torah portion is full of a lot of rich information but this week I'd like to focus on Exodus chapter 30, verses 11 through 16.
We see, starting in verse 11, that YHWH asks Moses to take a sum of the people of the children of Israel, that every man may give a ransom for his soul unto YHWH. That word ransom in the scriptures is the Hebrew number 3724, and it means figuratively a redemption price. In verse 12, we see the reason why YHWH wants every man to give a ransom for a soul. It says that there be no plague among them when thou numberst them. We see in verse 13 how much that is. It's a half a shekel after the shekel of the sanctuary for every man. In today's currency a half a shekel, is $10. And this requirement was only for men who were 20 years or older.
There is something very interesting in verse 15: that the rich shall not give more and the poor shall not give less than a half a shekel. That goes against our culture here in the United States. Here in the United States, if you are richer you give more in taxes. If you are poor, you give less in taxes. That's not the way it was in the scriptures. Whether you were rich or you were poor, no matter what your financial situation was, you gave that same half shekel.
Finally, in verse 16, we see what that offering was used for. It was used for the appointment for the service of the tabernacle of the Congregation, and as a memorial of the children of Israel before YHWH to make atonement for their souls.
Now, how do we correlate this with us today? We know that Messiah gave his life to be a ransom for us. This is made clear in a few scriptures, like Matthew chapter 20 verse 28 and Mark chapter 10 verse 45.
Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many. Matthew 20:28
For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many. Mark 10:45
Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time. 1 Timothy 2:6
Because we're sinners, we were bound for hell, but Messiah came to pay our ransom that we would not have to. This is made clear in 1 Peter chapter 1 verses 18 and 19.
Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Messiah, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:
Messiah paid a big price so that we might be saved. Messiah suffered and died that we might be saved. (See Isaiah 53 and Matthew chapter 27).
Today, let's not waste the ransom that Messiah paid for us on the cross. Messiah gave it all for us now let's give our whole life to Him and live for Him today.
