He Calms My Fears

“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” 1 John 3:1
I have often thought about the power that fear holds over us, and how much of what goes on in the world is based on or motivated by that emotion. We all feel afraid—of the past, of the future, of things we cannot control. Some are afraid of people, of animals, of illness—the list is endless. Most fears begin in childhood, and parents struggle to help their children outgrow them, with only some degree of success. But as adults, we must face the truth that terrible things do happen in our world, and that hurt people hurt people. Terribly.
I sometimes think of David, who penned so many psalms during his sleepless nights. How often he cried out, “O You who save those who trust in You from those who rise up against them.… Hide me under the shadow of Your wings, from the wicked who oppress me, from my deadly enemies who surround me.” Psalm 17:7–9.
As a small boy, nothing calmed my fears like my mother’s gentle singing, or my father’s quiet strength flowing into me as I snuggled up next to him. He was strong, he was brave, and he seemed to know how to handle anything that happened. That godly man is still with us, and his love and humble spirit reflect my Heavenly Father in so many ways, encouraging me to deepen my relationship with Him every day!
However, at some point, all of us have run from God. Even worse, many of us are taught to fear Him from an early age. Satan has done his worst by twisting the words of Scripture in the minds of parents and preachers to threaten that God will burn and torture them forever if they’re not perfect—which no one can possibly be.
In dealing with this problem, the great American writer and theologian, Frederick Buechner (BEEK-ner) described God’s grace as a gentle voice that says, “Here is the world. Terrible and beautiful things will happen. Don’t be afraid. I am with you.” Yes. Terrible things will happen; but because our loving God is with us, beautiful things will happen, too. As I run headlong into his open arms, He embraces me, wipes away my tears, and calms my trembling heart with singing (Zephaniah 3:17). His mercy fills the heavens, His love is everlasting, and His strength will never fail to calm all my fears.
