THE ADVENT TRUTH
What did JESUS say about the Sabbath?
JESUS IN THE OLD TESTAMENT.
• John 1:1–3 — Jesus created ALL things.
That includes the Sabbath in Genesis 2:1–3.
He blessed the 7th day, sanctified it, and made it holy.
The Sabbath is the first thing God made holy. Not a sacrifice. Not a feast. TIME.
• Exodus 20:8–11 — The law written with God’s own finger?
That was JESUS speaking from Sinai (1 Corinthians 10:1–4).
Jesus commanded: “Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy.”
Not “replace it later.” Not “choose your own day.”
• Isaiah 58:13–14 — The Sabbath is the LORD’S holy day.
Not “the Jewish day.”
It’s Christ’s special gift of rest and delight.
* So O.T. Jesus:
Created the Sabbath
Commanded the Sabbath
Called it His own holy day
Now…
JESUS IN THE NEW TESTAMENT
• Luke 4:16 — Jesus’ CUSTOM was to keep the Sabbath.
Not occasionally. Not when convenient.
It was His lifestyle.
• Mark 2:27–28 — Jesus corrected religious abuse of the Sabbath and said:
“The Sabbath was made for man…”
Not just Jews — mankind.
And: “The Son of Man is LORD of the Sabbath.”
You can’t be Lord of something that’s abolished.
• Matthew 24:20 — Jesus told His disciples to pray their flight wouldn’t happen on the Sabbath — 40 years AFTER the resurrection.
Why pray that… unless the Sabbath was still binding?
• John 14:15 — “If you love Me, keep My commandments.”
He didn’t exclude the 4th.
* So N.T. Jesus:
KEPT the Sabbath
DEFENDED the Sabbath
EXPECTED the Sabbath to continue
Anointed Himself as LORD of the Sabbath
* What Jesus NEVER said:
“The Sabbath is Jewish.”
“My resurrection changes the day.”
“Any day is fine as long as your heart is sincere.”
The TRUE question is not,
“What day do we want?”
but
“Which day did JESUS command and bless?”
He doesn’t ask us to create a new holy day.
He asks us to remember the one He already made holy.
The Sabbath is a memorial of creation…
a sign of redemption…
and in the end — a test of loyalty.
“If you love Me, keep My commandments.” — JESUS
