“And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” Philippians 2:8–11
A few weeks ago, God blessed us with an absolutely amazing gift—our newest grandbaby! Born at a time when fear, chaos, and uncertainty had gripped our nation and world, this sweet baby boy rests peacefully without a care, totally reliant on his parents’ care.
Nearly every day since he’s been home, I’ve had the privilege of holding and loving on him. Cradling him in my arms, with my hands cupped around his perfectly shaped little head, I gaze into his face. With wonder, I caress his soft cheeks. My heart rejoices as praise rises up within me to the Lord God for such a perfect gift. Tears come to my eyes as I watch him sleep, contentedly, in my arms.
Then the thought stirs within me of just how helpless this little guy truly is. I begin to think there is no creature on earth as vulnerable and humble as a newborn baby.
Of all the evils in this world, I think pride is one of worst and hardest to conquer. How hard, how nearly impossible is it to humble oneself in this world. From the time we are born, we’re told how great we are, how our achievements, beauty, intellect, careers, and even our good works are to be praised. Even as we attempt to be humble we can become prideful!
When I meditate on this and look at the baby in my arms, I think of Jesus Christ. To think that God Himself could or would humble Himself to the point of becoming human is mind-boggling. Philippians 2:7 says He “made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men.”
Knowing what this world would do to Him, He chose to suffer for our sakes! Jesus ran to sorrow, pain, shame, and humiliation. I, on the other hand, want to run from it. How the Almighty Creator would choose to do such a thing is truly amazing. The humility to become a mere man, in the form of a helpless baby, so the world could be reconciled to God is beyond my comprehension. That is ultimate humility, and love beyond compare.
