The Lord Is My Banner

Scripture

“And Moses built an altar and called its name, The-Lord-Is-My-Banner.”
Exodus 17:15 (NKJV)

Jehovah Nissi—The God Who Gives Victory

In Exodus 17, Israel fought against the Amalekites. As the battle raged, Moses lifted his hands to God, and as long as his hands were raised, Israel prevailed. When his arms grew weary, Aaron and Hur held them up until victory was secured. Afterward, Moses built an altar and named it Jehovah Nissi—“The Lord is My Banner.”

A banner in ancient times was a rallying point, a symbol of identity, unity, and victory. By naming the altar this way, Moses declared that the victory didn’t belong to Israel’s strength or skill—it belonged to the Lord.

This verse reminds us that:

God is our banner of victory. He goes before us and fights for us.

We need one another. Just as Aaron and Hur held up Moses’ arms, we need others to support us in prayer and faith.

Our worship honors the One who gives the victory. Moses built an altar to remember and give glory to God.

Reflection Questions

1. What battles in my life do I need to surrender to the Lord as my banner?

2. Do I recognize the importance of others who hold me up in prayer when I grow weary?

3. How can I build “altars of remembrance” in my life to celebrate God’s victories?

Prayer

Jehovah Nissi, thank You that You are my victory and my strength. I surrender every battle I face into Your hands. Help me to remember that my triumph comes not by my power but by Your Spirit. Surround me with people of faith to lift me when I grow weary, and let my life always give glory to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
