If psychic abilities were gifts from God, the Bible wouldn’t condemn the practice so clearly.
Many psychics claim that they were born psychic and their abilities are a gift from God, and so they believe using those abilities must be acceptable to Him. That’s how I used to think before I was saved, and my eyes were opened by God. That argument may sound convincing at first, yet God’s Word condemns divination and fortune telling, and warns believers to avoid them.
We can definitely be sensitive, but being psychic is not from God. Some children have paranormal experiences, but that’s not from God. That’s spiritual warfare. That’s what happened to me in childhood.
God’s Word says: “There shall not be found among you anyone who practices divination, or tells fortunes or interprets omens, or a sorcerer or a charmer or a medium or a necromancer or one who inquires of the dead; for whoever does these things is an abomination to the Lord” (Deuteronomy 18:10-12).
The appearance of “spiritual power” can come from demonic spirits, which is why God’s Word instructs believers to be discerning. “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God” (1 John 4:1). Many people assume that any paranormal ability must be divine, yet Scripture calls us to test spiritual claims by comparing them with God’s Word.
God’s Word even records an example of someone who appeared to have genuine psychic abilities. In the book of Acts 16:16, a slave girl brought profit to her owners through predicting things for people. Scripture explained the source of her power: “As we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl who had a spirit of divination and brought her owners much gain by fortune-telling” (Acts 16:16). Her supernatural knowledge came from a demonic spirit, not from God. The apostles cast the spirit out of her, showing that psychic abilities are not spiritual gifts from God.
Some people argue that if someone is born with psychic sensitivity or strong intuition, it must come from God. Yet being born with an inclination toward something doesn’t mean that God approves of it. Scripture says, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?” (Jeremiah 17:9). Human nature has been affected by the Fall, which means our natural tendencies can’t be used as the standard for determining what pleases God.
The deeper issue is where we seek guidance. Psychic readings encourage people to look for answers from spiritual guides instead of turning to God. God’s Word asks this important question: “When they say to you, ‘Inquire of the mediums and the necromancers,’ should not a people inquire of their God?” (Isaiah 8:19). God calls us to seek Him through prayer and through His Word rather than through divination.
Yet there’s good news for anyone who has been involved with psychic practices. In the early church, people who practiced magic turned away from those practices when they believed the Gospel: “A number of those who had practiced magic arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all” (Acts 19:19). God offers forgiveness and new life through Jesus Christ’s life, death, and resurrection. Instead of chasing hidden knowledge about the future, we can trust the One who holds our future and who reconciles us to God through the Gospel.
Jesus Christ came to earth as fully God and fully man. He was the only one to live a sinless life, and He intentionally died on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins. He physically rose from the dead three days later, defeating death and offering eternal life to all who repent and believe in Him. You’re not saved by good works, spiritual rituals, or self-effort, but by God’s grace through faith in Jesus alone. If you’re weary, lost, or searching for truth, have faith in Christ: He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life, and no one comes to the Father except through Him.
