HERALD OF THE GOSPEL
"In those days John the Immerser arose, and he would call out in the wilderness of Yehudah, saying, Repent, for the King of Heaven is on the brink of arrival!'' ~ Matthew 3:1-2
The Isaiah 40 passage goes on to instruct John (or Elijah), 'Get yourself up on a high mountain, O Zion, bearer of good news, lift up your voice mightily, O Jerusalem, bearer of good news; lift it up, do not fear. Say to the cities of Judah, Here is your God! (Isaiah 40:9). This passage is the source of the concept of the gospel. Jewish tradition considers Elijah to be the herald spoken of in Isaiah 40. He comes proclaiming the good news of Messiah's arrival and heralds it to Zion. From the apostolic perspective, John the Immerser (the Elijah who was to come) is the one who comes proclaiming the good news of Messiah's arrival.
