“Temptation whispers, then waits to grow—
Feed the desire, and reap the woe.”
A small crack in a dam, a slow leak beneath the sink, a spark in dry grass—we know how little things become disasters when left unattended. So it is with temptation. Whether we are seasoned believers or weary wanderers, the question is not whether temptation exists—but about what we allow to grow unchecked within. To walk without swaying, we must confront the hidden pull.
🕮 𝐉𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝟏:𝟏𝟑 warns, “𝘓𝘦𝘵 𝘯𝘰 𝘮𝘢𝘯 𝘴𝘢𝘺 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘩𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘦𝘮𝘱𝘵𝘦𝘥, 𝘐 𝘢𝘮 𝘵𝘦𝘮𝘱𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘰𝘧 𝘎𝘰𝘥.” This raises a question we have all wrestled with: Does God cause the hard things in our lives? Can we blame Him for the temptations we face? The answer is a resounding no. God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all (1 John 1:5).
James wrote to believers scattered, pressured, and weary. He knew we cannot blame God for the circumstances we choose to take. He continues, “𝘌𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘮𝘢𝘯 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘦𝘮𝘱𝘵𝘦𝘥, 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘩𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘥𝘳𝘢𝘸𝘯 𝘢𝘸𝘢𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘰𝘸𝘯 𝘭𝘶𝘴𝘵, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘦𝘥” (𝐉𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝟏:𝟏𝟒). “𝘋𝘳𝘢𝘸𝘯 𝘢𝘸𝘢𝘺” pictures a fish attracted from baits. Temptation succeeds not because the hook is strong, but because the desire is hungry. The pull begins long before the fall.
Scripture traces the pattern clearly: “𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘭𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘩𝘢𝘵𝘩 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘥, 𝘪𝘵 𝘣𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘵𝘩 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘩 𝘴𝘪𝘯: 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘪𝘯, 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘪𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘴𝘩𝘦𝘥, 𝘣𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘵𝘩 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘩 𝘥𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘩” (𝐉𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝟏:𝟏𝟓). What begins as a thought can become a chain. “𝘒𝘦𝘦𝘱 𝘵𝘩𝘺 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘥𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦” (𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐛𝐬 𝟒:𝟐𝟑), for drift begins there.
A spark doesn’t start a wildfire alone—it needs dry timber. So it is with sin: desire plus opportunity becomes disaster. David saw Bathsheba and lingered (𝟐 𝐒𝐚𝐦𝐮𝐞𝐥 𝟏𝟏:𝟐–𝟒). Eve saw the fruit as “𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘢𝘯𝘵” (𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐬 𝟑:𝟔). Achan saw the gold and coveted (𝐉𝐨𝐬𝐡𝐮𝐚 𝟕:𝟐𝟏). A wandering glance, an entertained thought, an unchecked desire—small hinges swing heavy doors. What we feed in secret will eventually reveal itself in public.
Jesus faced the same progression we do. He was “𝘪𝘯 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘱𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘴 𝘵𝘦𝘮𝘱𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘢𝘴 𝘸𝘦 𝘢𝘳𝘦, 𝘺𝘦𝘵 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘴𝘪𝘯” (𝐇𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐰𝐬 𝟒:𝟏𝟓). Not because He lacked desire, but because He anchored every longing in His Father’s will. He didn’t sway because He was rooted in truth. He never let desire conceive.
What desire have you been excusing? You do not need Christ merely to forgive the fall—you need Him to weaken the pull before you fall. Temptation grows where desire goes unchecked. Will you keep feeding what makes you sway, or let Christ uproot what pulls you away?
𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫: Heavenly Father, expose the desires that pull me from Your path. Guard my heart, steady my steps, and strengthen my will. Let truth rule where temptation whispers. Keep me anchored in Christ, and free me from the cravings that sway my walk. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
Remember, a dose of God’s Word a day will keep you going all day!
