God Looks at the Heart
Scripture
1 Samuel 16:7 (NKJV)
But the Lord said to Samuel Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature because I have refused him For the Lord does not see as man sees for man looks at the outward appearance but the Lord looks at the heart
Chosen by God, Seen by the Heart
1 Samuel chapter 16 marks an important turning point in Israel’s history. King Saul had disobeyed God, and the Lord rejected him as king. God then sent the prophet Samuel to Bethlehem to anoint a new king from the sons of Jesse.
When Samuel saw Jesse’s oldest son Eliab, he assumed that Eliab must be the one God had chosen. Eliab appeared strong, tall, and impressive. From a human perspective he looked like a king. Yet God immediately corrected Samuel’s thinking.
In verse 7 the Lord explained that His perspective is different from ours. People often judge by outward appearance, status, or ability. God, however, looks deeper. He sees the condition of the heart.
One by one Jesse’s sons passed before Samuel, but none of them were the one God had chosen. Finally Samuel asked if there were any other sons. Jesse mentioned the youngest, David, who was tending the sheep. When David was brought in, the Lord told Samuel that this was the one.
David was not the obvious choice. He was the youngest, a shepherd boy, and overlooked by others. Yet God saw something far more important than outward appearance. God saw a heart that loved Him and was willing to follow Him.
This chapter reminds believers that God’s calling is not based on human standards. He does not choose people because of their appearance, popularity, or position. He chooses those whose hearts are devoted to Him.
For believers today, 1 Samuel 16 encourages us to focus on the condition of our hearts rather than outward image. God sees who we truly are, and He desires hearts that are humble, faithful, and fully devoted to Him.
Reflection Questions
1. Do I sometimes judge others based only on outward appearance
2. Am I focusing more on outward success than the condition of my heart before God
3. How can I cultivate a heart that seeks to please God above everything else
Prayer
Lord God thank You that You see beyond outward appearances and look at the heart. Help me to focus on what truly matters to You. Shape my heart to love You, trust You, and follow You faithfully. Teach me not to judge others by outward appearance but to see people with Your perspective. In Jesus name Amen..
