“𝘏𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘴 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘭𝘰𝘸, 𝘦𝘺𝘦𝘴 𝘧𝘪𝘹𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘥,
𝘕𝘰 𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘬𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥 𝘨𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘰𝘭𝘥 𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘴 𝘭𝘦𝘥.”

We have all started strong—new plans, bold vows, fresh surrender. Yet how quickly distraction pulls at us. We straddle two worlds—professing Christ with our lips while clinging to old comforts in our hearts. Whether we are torn between obedience and compromise or distracted by what we left behind, the question is not whether we started—but about whether we are plowing straight.

Jesus makes this clear in 🕮 𝐋𝐮𝐤𝐞 𝟗:𝟔𝟐: “𝘕𝘰 𝘮𝘢𝘯, 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘱𝘶𝘵 𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘭𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘬, 𝘪𝘴 𝘧𝘪𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘥𝘰𝘮 𝘰𝘧 𝘎𝘰𝘥.” He spoke to would-be followers who wanted to follow—but with conditions. One wanted to return home first (𝐋𝐮𝐤𝐞 𝟗:𝟔𝟏). It sounded harmless, but divided focus reveals divided allegiance. The plow demands steady hands and forward eyes.

Their feet pointed forward, but their hearts leaned backward. Christ was not rejecting them—He was revealing the cost of divided commitment. “𝘓𝘰𝘰𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘬” means more than a glance; it means longing. A plowman who looks back plows crooked lines. A disciple who looks back walks crooked paths.

Commitment in Scripture is wholehearted. “𝘛𝘩𝘰𝘶 𝘴𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘵 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘓𝘖𝘙𝘋 𝘵𝘩𝘺 𝘎𝘰𝘥 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘦 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘵” (𝐃𝐞𝐮𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐲 𝟔:𝟓). “𝘈 𝘥𝘰𝘶𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘥 𝘮𝘢𝘯 𝘪𝘴 𝘶𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴” (𝐉𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝟏:𝟖). “𝘊𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘥𝘢𝘺 𝘸𝘩𝘰𝘮 𝘺𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘦” (𝐉𝐨𝐬𝐡𝐮𝐚 𝟐𝟒:𝟏𝟓). “𝘍𝘰𝘳𝘨𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘩 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘥” (𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐬 𝟑:𝟏𝟑). We cannot walk straight with a divided heart.

The heart that keeps glancing backward will always struggle to walk forward. Israel longed for Egypt and stalled in the wilderness (𝐍𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝟏𝟒:𝟑–𝟒). Lot’s wife looked back and lost her life (𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐬 𝟏𝟗:𝟐𝟔). Demas loved “𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥” and turned away (𝟐 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐲 𝟒:𝟏𝟎). A plow that keeps turning back never finishes the field. Christ calls us to cut the rope and follow Him fully.

Commitment is not proven in excitement, but in endurance. Jesus’ words remain clear: “𝘕𝘰 𝘮𝘢𝘯… 𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘬, 𝘪𝘴 𝘧𝘪𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘥𝘰𝘮 𝘰𝘧 𝘎𝘰𝘥” (𝐋𝐮𝐤𝐞 𝟗:𝟔𝟐). Christ does not call us to glance backward, but to follow Him forward—steadily, faithfully, completely. The past may call us backward, but Christ calls us forward.

So, what keeps pulling your eyes away from Christ? You don’t need Christ merely to inspire your beginning—you need Him to secure your commitment. Lay down divided loyalties. Fix your focus. Commitment requires direction. Will you keep glancing behind, or will you fix your eyes on Christ and walk forward and follow Him fully?

𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫: Heavenly Father, steady my heart and fix my eyes upon Christ. Remove the longings that pull me backward. Strengthen my commitment to follow Thee without condition. Let my steps be straight and my devotion undivided. Lead me faithfully in the path ahead. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Remember, a dose of God’s Word a day will keep you going all day!
