Sermon Title: For Such a Time as This: Stepping into God’s Purpose

Author: Will Helton

Esther 4:14 (NIV):

“For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?”

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Imagine a young woman, once an orphan in exile, now standing on a grand palace balcony at sunset. Her royal robes flow in the breeze, a golden crown gleams on her head, yet her face shows deep inner conflict—determination mixed with fear. She gazes toward the horizon, bathed in soft divine light. This is Queen Esther, captured in that pivotal moment of reflection.

The book of Esther is unique in Scripture: God’s name is never mentioned, yet His sovereign hand is everywhere. In chapter 4, verse 14, Mordecai challenges Esther with words that echo through the ages: “Who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?”

Today, in our own chaotic world—marked by division, injustice, uncertainty, and spiritual battles—God asks the same question of each of us. You are not here by accident. Your position, your influence, your story—however ordinary it feels—is part of His greater plan.

Let us explore this truth through three movements from Esther’s story, inspired by vivid biblical scenes.

1. Divine Appointment: God Positions Us Intentionally

Picture Esther kneeling in prayer in a lavish Persian chamber. Elegant royal attire drapes around her as she bows in humble surrender. In the shadowed background, Mordecai speaks urgently, while a faint glowing path of light descends from heaven straight to her throne—symbolizing God’s divine appointment and purpose.

Esther did not seek the crown; through a series of “coincidences,” God placed her there. Mordecai reminds her: God has orchestrated every detail.

Friends, the same is true for you. Your job, your family, your neighborhood, even your struggles—God has positioned you. As one preacher noted, “God intentionally planned the details of our lives.” Relief and deliverance may come another way if we refuse, but we miss the blessing—and risk peril—when we ignore our calling.

2. Courage at the Crossroads: Choosing to Step Forward

Envision a young Jewish woman transformed into a queen, standing at a literal and symbolic crossroads. One path is dark and silent, shrouded in shadows that threaten her family with peril. The other radiates with hope, light, and deliverance for her people. With courage, she steps forward into the radiant path, bathed in ethereal golden-hour light—a motivational, surreal biblical illustration of empowerment.

Esther faced death if she approached the king uninvited. Yet Mordecai’s words pierced her hesitation: silence equals complicity. She chose bravery.

In our time, we stand at crossroads too—will we speak against injustice, share the gospel boldly, forgive when it’s hard, or serve the overlooked? God calls us to step forward courageously, trusting His light to guide us. As Esther discovered, obedience unlocks deliverance.

3. Approaching the Throne: Faith in God’s Timing

Finally, see the epic scene: Esther approaches the massive doors of the king’s throne room. Guards stand watch on either side, spears in hand. Fear grips her heart, yet bravery propels her steps. Above, clouds part as a heavenly beam breaks through, shining directly on her—symbolizing God’s perfect timing and her unique role in history. This is a dramatic, cinematic biblical masterpiece.

Esther fasted, prayed, and risked everything. God honored her faith: the king extended his scepter, the plot was reversed, and the Jews were saved.

God’s timing is never late. That beam of light reminds us: when we move in faith, heaven moves with us.

Application: Your “Such a Time as This” Moment

Today, God is asking: Who knows but that you have come to this place—for such a time as this?

• In your workplace: Speak truth with grace.

• In your family: Model forgiveness and love.

• In your community: Stand for the vulnerable.

• In your church: Use your gifts without holding back.

Silence may seem safe, but it costs. Step forward. God has prepared you, positioned you, and empowered you.

Close-up Portrait: Looking to the Viewer

Imagine a close-up of Queen Esther—resolute yet vulnerable eyes staring directly at you. A subtle crown of light rays glows behind her head. Persian palace elements fade softly in the background. Overlaid in elegant script: “for such a time as this.” Warm tones, high detail, emotional depth—an inspirational Christian portrait.

That gaze is God’s gaze on you today. You are seen, chosen, and called.

Let us respond in prayer.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

You are the sovereign King who positions Your people with purpose. Thank You for the story of Esther, who knelt in prayer, stepped forward at the crossroads, and approached the throne in faith—trusting Your timing and light.

Lord, forgive us for times we have remained silent when You called us to speak, act, or stand. Awaken in us the courage to say, “If I perish, I perish,” knowing You hold our lives.

Reveal to each of us our “such a time as this.” Whether in small daily acts or great risks, help us embrace the role You’ve given us. Shine Your divine light on our paths, banish fear, and use us for deliverance—in our families, communities, and world.

We surrender our plans to Yours. Empower us by Your Spirit to live boldly for Your glory.

In the name of Jesus, who approached the ultimate throne for us, we pray. Amen.
