Dear Father,

Solomon recounts, saying, “Again I looked and saw all the oppression that was taking place under the sun: I saw the tears of the oppressed—and they have no comforter; power was on the side of their oppressors...

The story of oppression is often told from the perspective of the one who suffers from being oppressed. However, the law of nature creates a balance between what we give and what we receive, though it may not always be evident: that the balance of suffering on the side of the oppressed is corruption on the side of the oppressor.

I was once taught that absolute power corrupts absolutely. And though the oppressed experiences weariness in the flesh, the oppressor is dead in spirit and at heart. Often, the popularity of a phrase can reduce its impact in the eyes of men, but not in the face of reality: absolute corruption is a more dangerous state than can be adequately described with words.

The issue arises in what our values are. It is easier to be moved by the suffering of the oppressed than to consider the suffering of the oppressor, because we all desire life at its best. But when our values are more eternal, it becomes easier to see the ironic reality that the one who makes others suffer suffers the most--or will most likely suffer the most.

Father, what would be the case if the heart were as visible in its rust as the flesh is in its suffering.
