“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:16
Have you ever stopped to think about who is watching you? And if they are, what is their perception of you? I think about this a lot, and it helps me focus more on who I am as a follower of Christ. But unfortunately, that has not always been the way I’ve lived my life.
I was a senior in high school, and I’d signed up for my second year of vocational auto mechanics. This daily four-hour block prepared the way for a career, and the class was held in a mechanic’s shop located a good way from the main school building.
The class instructor was a hardened, short-tempered, Vietnam vet with an “in your face” training style. Many times during his lectures, he would tell us, “Watch what you do around here because someone is always watching.” We couldn’t understand why he would repeat that, and we’d joke among ourselves that he was just paranoid from his war experiences. But unfortunately, I found out what he meant first hand.
One late morning, my buddy and I had several minutes of free time before our class was over. Being the clever and over-ambitious boys that we were, we decided to go outside and practice some martial arts and other “fighting moves” on each other.
Now I want to make something very clear; I am not glorifying violence, but I am trying to prove a valuable point. So, we started exercising kicks, punches, chokeholds, and armbars. We were really getting into it when all of a sudden, our instructor and some of the other adults in the building came bursting through the door that was closest to us. We spun around, surprised to see the door fly open like that. The instructor saw us and suddenly stopped short of grabbing us. Then he burst into laughter! And what he said next is what this story is all about.
“How many times have I told you guys that someone is always watching?” he shouted. Then he explained that he received a phone call from the main building that a huge fight was going on outside his shop.
I’ve thought about that many times, and it makes so much more sense to me now. The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 10:31, “Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”
I encourage you to pattern your life after Christ. Allow His love to burst through with every action. If you ask Jesus to take over your life, His beauty of holiness will shine through—and you never know who may be watching.
