How God Speaks to His People
God is not silent. From the beginning of creation, God has always communicated with His people.
Many believers often ask, “Does God still speak today?” The answer is Yes. God still speaks, but we must understand how He communicates and develop the spiritual sensitivity to hear Him.
The Bible confirms this in Job 33:14:
"For God speaketh once, yea twice, yet man perceiveth it not."
This means God speaks in different ways, but many people fail to recognize His voice.
1. God Speaks Through His Word (The Bible)
The primary way God speaks to His people is through Scripture. The Bible is God's written voice to humanity.
In 2 Timothy 3:16–17:
"All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness."
Whenever you read the Bible, God is speaking directly to you. His Word provides guidance, correction, encouragement, and direction for life.
Example:
When someone is confused about what to do, a Bible verse may suddenly become clear and speak directly to their situation.
2. God Speaks Through the Holy Spirit
God also speaks through the Holy Spirit, who lives inside believers.
In John 16:13:
"Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth."
The Holy Spirit communicates through:
Inner conviction
Spiritual prompting
Peace or unrest in your spirit
Sometimes you may feel strongly that something is right or wrong — that can be the Holy Spirit guiding you.
3. God Speaks Through Dreams and Visions
Another biblical way God communicates is through dreams and visions.
In Joel 2:28:
"Your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions."
Throughout the Bible, God used dreams to communicate with His people.
Examples include:
Joseph received prophetic dreams (Genesis 37).
Daniel interpreted dreams and visions.
Joseph was warned in a dream to protect baby Jesus.
However, dreams must always be tested with the Word of God.
4. God Speaks Through His Servants (Prophets and Ministers)
God often speaks through anointed servants, such as prophets, pastors, and teachers.
In Amos 3:7:
"Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets."
Examples in the Bible include:
Nathan who corrected David
Samuel who guided kings
Elijah who delivered God's message
God still uses ministers today to deliver messages that bring direction, warning, and encouragement.
5. God Speaks Through Circumstances
Sometimes God speaks through life situations and open or closed doors.
In Revelation 3:7:
"What he opens no man can shut, and what he shuts no man can open."
For example:
A door of opportunity may open unexpectedly.
A plan may fail repeatedly because God is redirecting you.
Circumstances can sometimes be God's way of guiding your steps.
6. God Speaks Through a Still Small Voice
God may speak quietly within the heart.
In 1 Kings 19:12:
God spoke to Elijah through a still small voice, not through wind, earthquake, or fire.
This teaches that God’s voice is often gentle and quiet, and we must learn to be spiritually sensitive.
7. God Speaks Through Wise Counsel
God can also speak through godly advice from mature believers.
In Proverbs 11:14:
"In the multitude of counsellors there is safety."
Sometimes the answer you are praying for may come through a wise person God places in your life.
How to Hear God Clearly
Live a life of prayer – Prayer opens your spirit to hear God.
Study the Bible regularly – The more you know God's Word, the easier it is to recognize His voice.
Stay away from sin – Sin can block spiritual sensitivity.
Be spiritually quiet – Many people cannot hear God because their lives are too noisy.
Test every message with Scripture – God never contradicts His Word.
Conclusion
God is still speaking today. The real question is not whether God speaks, but whether we are listening.
Just like young Samuel said in 1 Samuel 3:10:
"Speak, Lord; for thy servant heareth."
