Psalm 16
You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore. (Ps. 16:11)
What is the big picture of our existence here on earth? To what end has God created us? How does this make a difference right now in the way we live, as well as in the way that we think about our eternal futures?
Here are three basic truths that emerge from Scripture:
Created for God’s glory. Based on the witness of the Bible and a careful examination of the character of God, we see that human beings have ultimately been created for the glory of the great God of the universe. We exist to bring him praise and honor. God creates for his own glory, and the universe itself speaks to his power and glory (see Ps. 19). God also saves sinners for his own glory; the glorious and gracious salvation that he offers through Jesus is all about the praise of his glory (see Eph. 1:6). The entire eternal experience of human beings who are saved through Jesus Christ will be one of giving glory and praise to the only true God and Savior. We are created primarily for the glory of God—both now, and in the eternal ages to come! Our eternal destiny is the delight of living for God’s glory without the stain of sin or the sting of death.
Eternal destinies. Scripture also shows clearly that human beings have eternal destinies—eternal life or eternal punishment. We are too uniquely made by God to simply die and cease to exist! Solomon talks about the “eternity” that God has placed into our hearts (see Eccles. 3:11). The reality of the imago Dei shows that God’s image and likeness is reflected in every human being he has created. All of these truths point to the fact that humans are not simply animals; they are eternal creatures that have souls. We are made for eternity—either eternity with God in the praise of his name or eternity apart from God in punishment for rejecting his Son, Jesus Christ.
Enjoying God forever. Finally, as we consider the end of mankind, we see that the only good choice for eternal, image-bearing humans is to enjoy God through faith in Jesus and praise his name in an eternity spent with him. It is to embrace the attitude of King David, when he declares to God, “You are my Lord; I have no good apart from you” (Ps. 16:1). David goes on to speak of the “pleasures” that are at God’s right hand forever (v. 11)—eternal pleasures that will be shared by all who truly love him and follow his Son. The right choice—the good end—for human beings, is to follow God, believe his word, repent of sin, trust Christ, and enjoy life in God’s presence forever and ever. God has provided a way for this through the death and resurrection of his own Son!
The Westminster Shorter Catechism puts it this way:
Q. What is the chief end of man?
A. To glorify God and enjoy him forever.
Is that your destiny? Is this the end for which you are living?
