Dear Father,
When the Philistines gathered their armies to battle against the Israelites, there came out a champion from the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath. He stood and cried out to the armies of Israel, saying, “Why have you come out to set your battle in array? I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together.”
I have always thought this to be an unfair match, considering that Goliath was a giant. And from a military standpoint, the Israelites might have had better chances if they had fought alongside one another. But Goliath changed the strategy of the battle and called for one man! Yet beyond the strategy and the odds, there was a deeper purpose at work--one that had little to do with armies and everything to do with David-- that point in a man’s destiny where he must face his giants alone, a path only a few eventually walk.
Like every season in a man’s life, this is one many do not easily discern. Some call it adulthood, but it is deeper than that. It is a defining season within adulthood--where destiny demands separation, and a person is required to act differently from the crowd, walk a path that may defy the norm, and make decisions that provoke misunderstanding and judgment.
While it may appear to be a lonely phase, it is often the clearest evidence that a man has obeyed destiny’s call. The men who have etched their names in the sands of time were not afraid to walk alone--more resolutely, alone with You.
