THE ADVENT TRUTH.
People argue about the 70 weeks of Daniel 9, but the prophecy is actually simple: it’s all about Jesus. Not antichrist speculation… JESUS. Gabriel told Daniel that 70 prophetic weeks (490 literal years) were “determined” for Israel — cut off from the larger 2,300 years — and during that time a list of six monumental things had to be accomplished (Dan. 9:24):
“To finish the transgression”
“To make an end of sins”
“To make reconciliation for iniquity”
“To bring in everlasting righteousness”
“To seal up the vision and prophecy”
“To anoint the most Holy”
Here’s the truth the rabbis never told you: no nation on earth could accomplish that list. Only the Messiah could. God wasn’t demanding that Israel achieve moral perfection by human effort — He was inviting them to accept the One who alone could fulfill righteousness on their behalf. The 70 weeks were a countdown to Jesus.
From the decree in 457 BC to “restore and build Jerusalem,” the prophecy lands EXACTLY on Messiah’s baptism in 27 AD — right on time. “After 62 weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for Himself.” That’s the Cross. In the “midst of the week” He caused the sacrificial system to cease by offering Himself once for all. And the final week closes with the gospel going to the Gentiles at the stoning of Stephen in 34 AD.
This prophecy is not about Israel’s political future — it’s God pleading with His people to accept the righteousness of Christ. The entire structure of the 70 weeks forms a heavenly arrow pointing straight to Jesus as the Lamb of God, the Mediator, the Sacrifice, the High Priest, and the King.
Israel was not being told, “Work harder.” They were being told, “Your Messiah is coming — believe in Him.” It was a call to righteousness by faith, and the tragedy is that many missed it while the humble embraced Him.
The 70 weeks prove that Jesus is the Christ, the fulfillment of prophecy, and the only One who can bring in everlasting righteousness. The prophecy begins with a decree… but it ends with a Person.
