The Heaven Jar
Kiahna loved Jesus with her whole heart. She loved Him in the way children doโฆ big and bright and full of wonder. And because she loved Him so much, she wanted to be just like Him. So Kiahna made a plan.
โIf I help everyone,โ she whispered to herself one morning, โthen Iโll be able to earn my way into Heaven.โ
She imagined a little jar in her heart. Every time she did something good, she pictured dropping in a shining, golden pebble. A helping hand. A kindness. A good deed. Clink. The jar began to fillโฆ and when it was full enough, surelyโฆ she would have done enough too. So Kiahna began.
She carried bags that were almost too heavy for her arms. She gave away her favorite snacks, even when her tummy still rumbled. She helped pick up toys, tie shoes, clean messes that werenโt hers. โHere, Iโll do it!โ she would say, smiling. Clink. Another pebble in her jar.
At first, it made her feel warm and glowy inside, like sunshine lived in her chest. But after a whileโฆ her arms started to ache. Her feet felt slow. Her smile grew a little tired at the edges. Still, she kept going. Because every time she restedโฆ she imagined her jar not filling. And that worried her.
One afternoon, Kiahna saw someone sitting alone. They looked very, very sad. Kiahna hurried over. She told kind words. She shared what she had. She tried everything she knew how to do. But the sadness didnโt go away. Not even a little.
Kiahnaโs heart sank. She stood very still and whispered inside, โI triedโฆ why didnโt it work?โ For the first time, she looked at her heart-jarโฆ and it didnโt feel full at all. Instead, it felt empty.
Kiahna didnโt know what else to do. She did everything like Jesus would have. Her feet carried her somewhere quiet somewhere softโฆ straight into Miss Tilliaโs garden.
Miss Tilia was always there, waiting for anyone who might need her. The flowers swayed gently when Kiahna stepped in, like they were saying hello.
โOh, little one,โ Miss Tilia said, her voice as calm as a breeze, โyouโve been working very hard.โ
Kiahna nodded, her eyes a little shiny. โI was trying to be like Jesus,โ she said. โButโฆ I donโt think Iโm doing it right.โ
โCome,โ she said. โThere are a few things I want to show you.โ First, she guided Kiahna to a small woven basket sitting on a stone table. โGo on,โ Miss Tilia said gently. โFill it with all your good deeds.โ
Kiahna didnโt understand, but she tried. She imagined all her good deeds as pebblesโฆ and one by one, glowing pebbles appeared in her hands. She placed them carefully into the basket, but as soon as she let goโฆ they disappeared. Every single one. Kiahna blinked. โIโฆ I filled it.โ
Miss Tilia nodded. โI know you did.โ
Kiahna tried again. And again. Each time, the same thing happened. Nothing stayed.
Her shoulders drooped. โI donโt understand,โ she whispered.
โThat basket,โ Miss Tillia said softly, โis for things that cannot be earned.โ Kiahna looked up. โHeavenโฆ loveโฆ being Hisโฆโ Miss Tilia continued, โthose were never meant to be bought with good deeds.โ
Kiahnaโs eyes filled with quiet confusion.
โThenโฆ why do I try so hard?โ
โBecause you love Him,โ she said. โAnd that part is beautiful.โ
Then Miss Tilia guided her to a quiet pond.
The water was smooth like glass. โLook,โ she said. Kiahna leaned over. She expected to see all the things she had doneโฆ but insteadโฆshe just saw herself. There was something else. A warmth. A light. A belonging. Like she was already knownโฆ already chosenโฆ already enough.
Kiahnaโs voice was very small. โHeโฆ already loves me?โ
โHe always has.โ Miss Tillia said.
A tear slipped down Kiahnaโs cheek, but it didnโt feel sad. It feltโฆ relieving. Like setting down something heavy she didnโt know she was carrying. When Kiahna left the garden, the world hadnโt changed, but she had. She still helped people. She still gave. She still loved. But nowโฆ she rested when she was tired. She noticed the people close to her. She listened more than she hurried. And her heart felt different.
She Was different. Not like a jar she had to fillโฆ but like a garden that growing. Sometimes, when she did something kind, she would smile to herself and whisper: โI donโt have to earn Heavenโฆโ Sheโd pause, just for a moment, feeling the warmth inside her chest. โโฆI just get to love like Him.โ And somewhere, not far away,
Miss Tilliaโs flowers swayed a little brighter.
