Dear Father,
I just realized that the first time the promise of a child was made to Abraham, Sarah’s name was not mentioned. In speaking to Abraham, You said, “He that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir.” And sometime after this, “Sarai said unto Abram, Behold now, the Lord hath restrained me from bearing: I pray thee, go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai.”
Why would she think she was restrained from bearing unless she didn't know the promise included her. And why would Abraham hearken to her regarding Hagar if he knew the promise included Sarah? The Scripture also states that after receiving the promise, “Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.” From this, it can be inferred that the issue surrounding the birth of Ishmael was not simply their inability to wait, but a misunderstanding of the prophecy.
There is a place for faith in divine promises, but there should also be a place for obtaining clarity. Yet how often do we hold onto divine and scriptural promises without understanding all that is required to bring them to pass in our lives?
There are those who are at the point of losing their faith because they believe and do not see. Perhaps they have held onto faith without knowledge, unaware that while faith sustains the promise, understanding is what guides it's fulfilment.
