Faithful Friendships
Scripture
1 Samuel 20:17 (NKJV)
Now Jonathan again caused David to vow because he loved him for he loved him as he loved his own soul
Covenant Loyalty in Difficult Times
1 Samuel chapter 20 highlights the deep friendship between David and Jonathan during a time of great danger. Saul’s desire to kill David had intensified, and David turned to Jonathan for help in discerning Saul’s intentions.
Jonathan, though the son of Saul and rightful heir to the throne, chose loyalty to God’s plan over personal ambition. He recognized that God’s hand was upon David and willingly stood beside him, even when it put him at odds with his own father.
Together, David and Jonathan formed a covenant, a binding promise of faithfulness and protection. Jonathan agreed to warn David of Saul’s plans, risking his own safety in the process. Their friendship was not shallow or based on convenience. It was rooted in love, trust, and a shared commitment to God’s will.
Verse 17 emphasizes the depth of Jonathan’s love. He loved David as his own soul. This kind of friendship reflects selflessness and sacrifice. Jonathan was willing to lay aside his own future as king because he trusted God’s greater purpose.
During the feast at Saul’s table, Jonathan tested his father’s intentions. When Saul reacted in anger and confirmed his plan to kill David, Jonathan warned David, allowing him to escape. Their farewell was emotional, marked by tears and deep affection, yet grounded in the covenant they had made before the Lord.
This chapter teaches that godly friendships are a gift from God. True friends strengthen our faith, support us in trials, and encourage us to walk in God’s purpose. They are willing to stand with us even when it is difficult or costly.
For believers today, 1 Samuel 20 reminds us of the importance of surrounding ourselves with faithful, God-centered relationships. It also challenges us to be that kind of friend to others.
