DON'T CONFUSE LUST WITH LOVE

What Many Called Love May Not Be Love At All.

In 2 Samuel 13, we are told that Amnon, the son of King David, became obsessed with his half-sister Tamar. The Bible says HE WAS SO CONSUMED WITH DESIRE that he became physically sick over it. Amnon said he loved Tamar.

That is the story. Not with violence. Not with hatred. Not with open evil. IT BEGINS WITH A WORD MANY PEOPLE TRUST, Love.

But Scripture slowly reveals something terrifying. WHAT AMON CALLED LOVE WAS NEVER LOVE AT ALL.

In 2 Samuel 13, we are told that AMMON, the son of King David, BECAME OBSESSED with his half-sister Tamar. The Bible says he was so CONSUMED WITH DESIRE that he became physically sick over it.

Think about that. This was NOT A PASSING THOUGHT. This was NOT A MOMENT OF TEMPTATION. This was AN OBSESSION that he ENTERTAINED until it GREW INTO SOMETHING DESTRUCTIVE.

And here is where THIS OBSESSION EXPOSES ONE OF THE MOST DANGEROUS SPIRITUAL DECEPTIONS. LUST OFTEN DISGUISES ITSELF AS LOVE.

Amnon convinced himself that what he felt was love. But REAL LOVE DOES NOT MANIPULATE. REAL LOVE DOES NOT TRAP SOMEONE IN A ROOM. REAL LOVE DOES NOT IGNORE SOMEONE'S DIGNITY. REAL LOVE PROTECTS.

But AMNON’S DESIRE DID THE OPPOSITE.
With the Help Of A Manipulative Friend named Jonadab, Amnon Devised A Plan. He pretended to be sick and asked that Tamar come personally to care for him.

At first glance, it LOOKED INNOCENT. But HIDDEN MOTIVES were already at work. When Tamar came to serve him, the TRAP WAS SET. The ROOM WAS CLEARED. The DOORS WERE SHUT.

Then THE TRUTH SURFACED. AMNON DEMANDED WHAT HAD NEVER BEEN GIVEN.

TAMAR PLEADED WITH HIM. She begged him not to do such a disgraceful thing in Israel. She warned him that this act would bring shame upon them both.

She even tried to REASON WITH HIM. But LUST DOES NOT LISTEN TO WISDOM.

“But HE REFUSED TO LISTEN to her.” (2 Samuel 13:14)

That SENTENCE REVEALS THE NATURE OF UNCONTROLLED DESIRE. LUST DOES NOT CARE about consequences. LUST DOES NOT CARE about dignity. LUST DOES NOT CARE about the other person’s soul. IT ONLY CARES ABOUT BEING SATISFIED.

And after AMNON FORCED WHAT HE WANTED, something shocking happened.

“Then AMNON HATED HER WITH VERY GREAT HATRED.” (2 Samuel 13:15)

The SAME MAN WHO SAID HE LOVED TAMAR NOW DESPISED HER. The HATRED THAT FOLLOWED WAS STRONGER THAN THE DESIRE that came before it.

WHAT HE CALLED LOVE WAS NEVER LOVE. IT WAS APPETITE. And APPETITE DISAPPEARS ONCE IT IS FED.

LUST PROMISES AFFECTION BUT DELIVERS DESTRUCTION. It speaks softly at first. It feels intense. It feels convincing. But UNDERNEATH THE EMOTIONS IS SOMETHING DEEPLY SELFISH.

Love gives. Lust takes. Love honors. Lust consumes. Love waits. Lust demands. Love sees a person made in the image of God. Lust sees an opportunity.

WE ARE WARNED ABOUT UNCHECKED DESIRE. Sin rarely begins with an explosion. It usually begins with THOUGHTS THAT ARE ENTERTAINED INSTEAD OF SURRENDERED.

Amnon did not fall in one moment. He fell in stages. First came desire. Then obsession. Then deception. Then sin. Then hatred. Then devastation.

And THE CONSEQUENCES DID NOT STOP WITH HIM. Tamar was LEFT DEVASTATED. David’s HOUSEHOLD WAS FRACTURED. Absalom later TOOK REVENGE and MURDERED Amnon.

ONE MOMENT OF UNRESTRAINED DESIRE TRIGGERED A CHAIN REACTION OF TRAGEDY.

SIN RARELY DESTROYS JUST ONE LIFE. IT SPREADS.

This story is uncomfortable, but it is also deeply important because it REVEALS SOMETHING ABOUT THE HUMAN HEART that still exists today.

Many people CONFUSE INTENSITY WITH LOVE. But INTENSITY IS NOT PROOF OF PURITY.

SOME RELATIONSHIPS ARE BUILT ON GENUINE LOVE, PATIENCE, RESPECT, and SACRIFICE. Others are built on craving, pressure, manipulation, and control.

And THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO CAN DETERMINE WHETHER A RELATIONSHIP BRINGS LIFE OR DEVASTATION.

LOVE THAT REFLECTS THE CHARACTER OF GOD. Godly love is patient. Godly love is kind. Godly love does not dishonor others. Godly love is not self-seeking.

LUST IS THE OPPOSITE. It disguises itself as passion but leaves destruction in its wake. Amnon’s story stands as a warning across generations. Not everything that feels like love comes from love.

Some desires must be resisted, not followed.
Some feelings must be crucified, not trusted.
And some “love stories” are actually warnings.

IT IS CKEAR THAT ANYTHING THAT REQUIRES SIN TO PROVE LOVE IS NOT LOVE. Anything that ignores dignity in pursuit of pleasure is not love. Anything that destroys another person just to satisfy desire was never love to begin with.

REAL LOVE REFLECTS GOD.

LUST REFLECTS THE FLESH when it is left unchecked. And THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LOVE AND LUST CAN CHANGE THE COURSE OF A LIFE. Or the course of a family. Or the course of a generation.

THE HARD TRUTH IS SOMETIMES THE MOST DANGEROUS WORDS ARE NOT HATRED OR ANGER.

SOMETIMES THE MOST DANGEROUS WORDS ARE WHEN SOMEONE SAYS “I LOVE YOU” BUT MEANS “I WANT YOU.” And those two things are not the same.

People sometimes confuse lust with love, and we must be discerning to recognize the difference before damage is done!!!
