•A Prayer for God to Be Our Refuge•
Anthony Valente
“I am praying to you because I know you will answer, O God. Bend down and listen as I pray. Show me your unfailing love in wonderful ways. By your mighty power you rescue those who seek refuge from their enemies. Guard me as you would guard your own eyes. Hide me in the shadow of your wings. Protect me from wicked people who attack me, from murderous enemies who surround me.
(Psalm 17:6-9)
“OK,” my oldest son said to his little sister, “Come here.”
He simply held her, and let her cry on his shoulder, about a day gone wrong, an untrue rumor, and a friendship fight.
“I know we fight a lot,” he said to his little sis, “but we’re built-in best friends ….you can always come to me and I will always be there for you.”
The sweet sound of them encouraging and comforting each other was an answer to a desperate prayer of mine for them to grow a solid, Christ-centered friendship out of their sibling relationship. It also reminded me of God’s devotion to me.
God undoubtedly defends us, and shields us from what we can’t even see coming. But, the people He places faithfully in our lives can also serve as vessels of His love and protective hand over us. His comfort, compassion, and love for us. Psalm 57:1 reads:
“Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy! I look to you for protection. I will hide beneath the shadow of your wings until the danger passes by.” (NLT)
We can run to God, and collapse into Him in tears as my daughter did with her brother. He will hold us, listen to us, and help us to move forward through hard days and painful trials. To the God of comfort, who hides us beneath the shadow of His wings, be all the glory.
Heavenly Father,
Today we reach into Your Word to find Psalms full of hope and reminder of Your protective hand on our lives. We pray these truths over our days, and as a salve to our wounds. Many of us walk around in pain, isolated from the comfort You freely offer. Take our guard down to allow You to embrace us in tearful, hard, moments, God. We pray these words over our lives at this moment:
“Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. This I declare about the LORD: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; He is my God, and I trust him. For he will rescue you from every trap and protect you from deadly disease. He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection.”
(Psalm 91:1-4 NLT)
Yes, and Amen, God. We pray to realize the shelter we live in through Christ Jesus, finding rest in the shadow of You, Almighty God. You are our refuge. We run to You for safety. Help us to increase our trust in You, day by day. Help us to increase our belief that You will protect us from disease and place the pieces of Your armored protection over us each day.
Father, we know each day has a purpose You will in our lives. On the days it is hard for us to stand up against all of the calamity and chaos in the world flying at our faces, help us to seek You and find You in moments of calm and clarity. Let Your peace reign our hearts, minds, and actions. Let Your Holy Spirit fall over us in a calm sense of purpose, yet renewed vigor to follow Jesus with more determination each day we live.
Thank You for life. Thank You for the people You have faithfully placed around us. Thank You for the talents, gifts, blessings, healings, and purposes You have weaved into our lives. Thank You for choosing us, Jehovah Jireh. In You, we have all we need. Let the verses of the Psalms we marinated our hearts in today feed our bodies, minds, and souls the strength we need to follow You wholeheartedly every day You will for us to walk this earth. We trust and love You, Lord.
In Jesus’ Name,
AMEN
Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.
(Psalm 34:8)
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.
(Psalm 46:1-2, 7)
The eternal God is your refuge, and his everlasting arms are under you.
(Psalm 33:7)
But let all who take refuge in you be glad; let them ever sing for joy. Spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may rejoice in you.
(Psalm 5:11)
God is good, a hiding place in tough times. He recognizes and welcomes anyone looking for help, No matter how desperate the trouble. (Praise God!)
(Nahum 1:7)
You have been a refuge for the poor, a refuge for the needy in their distress, a shelter from the storm and a shade from the heat.
(Isaiah 25:4)
But the LORD will redeem those who serve him. No one who takes refuge in him will be condemned.
(Psalm 34:22)
The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
(Psalm 18:2)
The name of the LORD is a strong tower; The righteous runs into it and is safe.
(Proverbs 18:10)
How precious is your unfailing love, O God! All humanity finds shelter in the shadow of your wings.
(Psalm 36:7)
Casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.
(1 Peter 5:7)
Trust [confidently] in Him at all times, O people; Pour out your heart before Him. God is a refuge for us. Selah.
(Psalm 62:8)
Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
(Hebrews 4:16)
But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.
(Isaiah 40:31)
The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
(Psalm 23:1-6)
“Listen to Me, you who follow after righteousness, You who seek the LORD: Look to the rock from which you were hewn, And to the hole of the pit from which you were dug.
(Isaiah 51:1)
I know all the birds of the hills, and all that moves in the field is mine.
(Psalm 50:11)
(pic verse)
I will be your God throughout your lifetime— until your hair is white with age. I made you, and I will care for you. I will carry you along and save you.
(Isaiah 46:4)
