THE STRATEGIC RISK OF OBEDIENCE TO THE PROCEEDING WORD
The Deep Water Principle. Why Breakthrough Happens After Everyone Else Quits
One of the MOST POWERFUL SUCCESS PRINCIPLES in the New Testament happens
Luke 5:1-11 NASB1995
[1] Now it happened that while the crowd was pressing around Him and listening to the word of God, He was standing by the lake of Gennesaret; [2] and He saw two boats lying at the edge of the lake; but the fishermen had gotten out of them and were washing their nets. [3] And He got into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, and asked him to put out a little way from the land. And He sat down and began teaching the people from the boat. [4] When He had finished speaking, He said to Simon, “Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.” [5] Simon answered and said, “Master, we worked hard all night and caught nothing, but I will do as You say and let down the nets.” [6] When they had done this, they enclosed a great quantity of fish, and their nets began to break; [7] so they signaled to their partners in the other boat for them to come and help them. And they came and filled both of the boats, so that they began to sink. [8] But when Simon Peter saw that, he fell down at Jesus’ feet, saying, “Go away from me Lord, for I am a sinful man!” [9] For amazement had seized him and all his companions because of the catch of fish which they had taken; [10] and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not fear, from now on you will be catching men.” [11] When they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed Him.
Most people read it as a miracle story. ENTREPRENEURS SHOULD READ IT AS A BREAKTHROUGH STRATEGY.
It BEGINS WITH EXHAUSTION.
Simon Peter was a PROFESSIONAL FISHERMAN, not a hobbyist, not a weekend angler. FISHING WAS HIS BUSINESS. HIS LIVELIHOOD. HIS FAMILY DEPENDED ON IT.
And on this particular night…Everything went wrong.
Luke 5:5 NASB1995
[5] Simon answered and said, “Master, we worked hard all night and caught nothing, but I will do as You say and let down the nets.”
All night! No results! No profit! No return! Every entrepreneur knows this feeling.
You launch the offer. You run the ads. You host the event. You publish the content. And the numbers don’t move. The sales don’t come. The effort feels wasted. That is exactly where Peter was.
The boats were pulled to shore. The nets were being washed. In first-century fishing culture, that meant one thing.
The workday was finished. They were done. No more attempts. No more casting. No more effort. BUT THEN JESUS STEPPED INTO PETER’S BOAT.
Luke 5:3 NASB1995
[3] And He got into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, and asked him to put out a little way from the land. And He sat down and began teaching the people from the boat.
The boat became a floating platform. Jesus begins teaching the crowd. Thousands listening from the shore.
Peter sitting nearby. Probably tired. Probably frustrated. Probably thinking about the empty nets. Then JESUS GIVES PETER AN INSTRUCTION THAT MUST HAVE SOUNDED ABSURD.
Luke 5:4 NASB1995
[4] When He had finished speaking, He said to Simon, “Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.”
THIS INSTRUCTION VIOLATED EVERYTHING PETER KNEW ABOUT FISHING. Fishing happened at night. Not during the day. Daytime meant fish could see the nets.
PROFESSIONAL FISHERMEN AVOIDED DAYTIME CASTING. Yet Jesus tells him to do exactly that. Launch out. Into deeper water. And cast again.
Peter answers honestly.
Luke 5:5 NASB1995
[5] Simon answered and said, “Master, we worked hard all night and caught nothing, but I will do as You say and let down the nets.”
Translation in modern language: “This doesn’t make sense.” “We already tried.” “The numbers didn’t work.” But PETER SAYS SOMETHING NEXT THAT REVEALS THE MINDSET BEHIND MANY BREAKTHROUGHS.
He continues:
“NEVERTHELESS AT THY WORD I will let down the net.”
That sentence contains a powerful entrepreneurial principle.
I call it, 'The Deep Water Principle'
Because BREAKTHROUGH OFTEN HAPPENS ONE ATTEMPT AFTER DISCOURAGEMENT. PETER PUSHES THE BOAT AWAY FROM THE SHORE INTO DEEPER WATER. HE CASTS THE NET AGAIN. And SUDDENLY SOMETHING EXTRAORDINARY HAPPENS.
Luke 5:6 NASB1995
[6] When they had done this, THEY ENCLOSED A GREAT QUANTITY OF FISH, and THEIR NETS BEGAN TO BREAK;
Not a few fish. A multitude. So many fish the nets begin tearing.
Luke 5:7 NASB1995
[7] so they signaled to their partners in the other boat for them to come and help them. And they came and filled both of the boats, so that they began to sink.
Two boats full of fish, Nearly sinking. From ONE DECISION. One more cast. After failure.
THAT MOMENT REVEALS A PROFOUND SUCCESS PATTERN. The MIRACLE did not happen near the shore. It HAPPENED IN THE DEEP.
Deep Water Represents Risk.
Deep Water Represents Uncertainty.
Deep water represents moving beyond comfort.
Shallow water feels safe. You stay close to shore. You can see the bottom. You control the variables. But SHALLOW WATER RARELY PRODUCES MASSIVE CATCHES. DEEP WATER DOES.
Let’s pull three entrepreneurial principles out of Luke 5:1–11.
1. EXPERTISE CAN BECOME A LIMITATION.
Peter was an expert fisherman. But his knowledge almost prevented the miracle. Because based on his experience, fishing in the daytime was pointless.
Entrepreneurs face the same danger. Experience creates mental barriers.
“We already tried that.” “That won’t work.”
“That’s not how the industry operates.”
But INNOVATION OFTEN COMES FROM CHALLENGING WHAT EVERYONE ASSUMES IS IMPOSSIBLE.
The taxi industry believed rides required regulation and medallions. Then Uber appeared.
Hotels believed travelers needed hotel buildings. Then Airbnb appeared.
Music companies believed physical albums would always dominate. Then streaming transformed the industry.
Sometimes BREAKTHROUGH HAPPENS WHEN SOMEONE CHALLENGES WHAT THE EXPERTS “KNOW.”
2. BREAKTHROUGH OFTEN COMES AFTER EXHAUSTION.
Peter had already worked all night. The miracle came after the fatigue.
History shows the same pattern repeatedly. Thomas Edison tested thousands of materials before creating the practical lightbulb. Colonel Sanders was rejected 1,009 times before building KFC.
Steve Jobs was removed from Apple before returning to lead its greatest innovations. ENTREPRENEURIAL SUCCESS IS RARELY ABOUT A SINGLE BRILLIANT MOMENT.
IT IS ABOUT REFUSING TO STOP CASTING THE NET.
PERSISTENCE IS OFTEN THE BRIDGE BETWEEN EFFORT AND BREAKTHROUGH.
3. Deep Water Produces Big Results.
SHALLOW WATER CREATES SMALL CATCHES. DEEP WATER CREATES ABUNDANCE. But deep water requires courage.
Launching a company. Hosting an event. Publishing a book. Speaking publicly. nvesting in a bold vision. These are deep-water moves.
They expose you. They involve risk.
But they also create the possibility of extraordinary returns.
Peter could have stayed near the shore. INSTEAD HE LAUNCHED DEEPER. And everything changed.
Now here is the part many people overlook. When PETER SAW THE MIRACLE, HIS REACTION WAS NOT CELEBRATION BUT HUMILITY.
Luke 5:8 NASB1995
[8] But when Simon Peter saw that, he fell down at Jesus’ feet, saying, “Go away from me Lord, for I am a sinful man!”
Peter suddenly realized something. THE CATCH WASN’T JUST ABOUT FISH BUT IT WAS ABOUT THE CALLING.
Luke 5:10 NASB1995
[10] ... And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not fear, FROM NOW ON YOU WILL BE CATCHING MEN.”
THE MIRACLE WAS PREPARATION. THE MASSIVE CATCH OF FISH EXPANDED PETER’S CAPACITY WHICH SHOWED HIM WHAT WAS POSSIBLE WHEN OBEDIENCE MET OPPORTUNITY.
Which leads to one final entrepreneurial insight. SOMETIMES OUR BREAKTHROUGH IS NOT JUST ABOUT INCOME. IT IS ABOUT CAPACITY.
CAPACITY TO INFLUENCE more people. CAPACITY TO LEAD at a higher level. CAPACITY TO HANDLE bigger opportunities. And often THAT CAPACITY IS BUILT IN MOMENTS THAT STRETCH OUR COURAGE and OUR FAITH.
Where are we fishing right now? Are we staying near the shore…Repeating the same safe strategies? Or are we willing to launch into deeper water?
SOME OF THE GREATEST BREAKTHROUGHS HAPPEN IN THE SAME PLACE RIGHT AFTER SOMEONE DECIDES TO MAKE ONE MORE CAST.
