TAKE HEED NOT TO LOSE OUR FIRST LOVE IN OUR FAITHFULNESS.

THERE IS A WARNING in the book of Revelation THAT QUIETLY TERRIFIES US. Not because it was written to a corrupt church. Not because it was written to a rebellious church. But BECAUSE IT WAS WRITTEN TO A FAITHFUL CHURCH.

THE CHURCH IN EPHESUS LOOKED STRONG ON THE OUTSIDE. They worked hard. They endured hardship. They refused false teachers. They tested those who claimed to be apostles. They protected truth. In many ways, THEY WERE THE KIND OF CHURCH MOST BELIEVERS WOULD ADMIRE. But then Jesus said something that shook our attention.

Revelation 2:4 NASB1995
[4] But I HAVE THIS AGAINST YOU, that YOU HAVE LEFT YOUR FIRST LOVE.

That sentence REVEALS one of THE MOST DANGEROUS SPIRITUAL DRIFTS IN THE BELIEVERS LIFE.

Because THE EPHESIAN CHURCH did not LOSE THEIR ACTIVITY. THEY LOST THEIR AFFECTION. They were still working, Still serving, Still standing for truth. BUT THE FIRE THAT ONCE BURNED IN THEIR HEARTS FOR CHRIST HAD GROWN DIM.

The uncomfortable truth this exposes is WE CAN BE ACTIVE IN THE WORK OF GOD AND STILL DRIFT AWAY FROM THE LOVE OF GOD.

We can KEEP THE ROUTINE WITHOUT KEEPING THE RELATIONSHIP. We can DEFEND DOCTRINE WHILE QUIETLY LOSING DEVOTION. We can SERVE FAITHFULLY WHILE OUR HEART SLOWLY COOLS.

This is what makes the warning to Ephesus so sobering. THE PROBLEM WAS NOT REBELLION. IT WAS REPLACEMENT.

Somewhere along the way, DUTY REPLACED DELIGHT. FAITHFULNESS BECAME MECHANICAL. SERVICE BECAME ROUTINE. And INTIMACY with Christ slowly FADED into the background.

The church still looked alive…But THE LOVE THAT ONCE FUELED EVERYTHING WAS NO LONGER BURNING the same way.

This is why JESUS DIDN’T SIMPLY COMMAND THEM TO “DO MORE.” HE TOLD THEM THREE THINGS. REMEMBER. REPENT. RETURN.

REMEMBER where we once stood. REMEMBER when your love for Christ was fresh. REMEMBER when PRAYER was not just something you scheduled…but something you longed for.

REMEMBER when worship moved your heart.
REMEMBER when obedience was fueled by gratitude, not obligation.

Then Jesus says REPENT. Because losing your first love is not just emotional drift. It is spiritual distance. It happens slowly. Quietly. Almost invisibly.

No one wakes up one day and decides, “Today I will lose my love for Christ.” Instead it fades through small compromises.

Busy schedules. Spiritual autopilot. Religious routine without relational depth. Until one day you realize something is missing.

You still believe. You still serve. You still show up. But something inside no longer burns the same way.

And Jesus says the answer is not to pretend everything is fine. The answer is to return. Return to the place where love was alive. Return to the place where Christ was not just part of your life…He was the center of it.

Because the most frightening part of this warning is not the rebuke. It is the consequence.

Jesus said IF THEY DID NOT RETURN, THEIR LAMPSTAND WOULD BE REMOVED. In other words, a church can keep its buildings, keep its programs, keep its reputation and STILL LOSE THE PRESENCE THAT ONCE MADE IT SHINE.

THE LAMP DOES NOT GO OUT SUDDENLY. IT FADES WHEN THE OIL RUNS DRY. AND LOVE IS THE OIL OF THE CHRISTIAN LIFE.

WITHOUT LOVE, doctrine becomes cold. WITHOUT LOVE, service becomes performance. WITHOUT LOVE, worship becomes noise. But WHEN LOVE IS ALIVE…EVERYTHING CHANGES.

PRAYER becomes COMMUNION. OBEDIENCE becomes JOY. WORSHIP becomes OVERFLOW.
And THE CHRISTIAN LIFE STOPS FEELING LIKE MAINTENANC…and STARTS FEELING LIKE RELATIONSHIP again.

THIS WARNING was not written just for Ephesus. It WAS WRITTEN FOR EVERY BELIEVER who has walked with Christ long enough TO RISK BECOMING FAMILIAR with holy things.

Sometimes the GREATEST DANGER in the Christian life IS NOT PERSECUTION. It is ROUTINE. Not failure. But SLOW FADING. Not abandoning Christ…but GRADUALLY LOVING HIM LESS.

And the truth is, many believers reading this may recognize that feeling. We still care about God. We still want to honor Him. But the fire we once had feels weaker.

If that is us, THE MESSAGE of Ephesus is NOT CONDEMNATION. It is AN INVITATION. An INVITATION to REMEMBER. AN INVITATION TO RETURN.

Because the same Jesus who warned them…also gave them a path back. THE DOOR TO RENEWAL was never closed. And it still isn’t.

Are we still doing things for God or are we still walking closely with Him? Because CHRISTIANITY WAS NEVER MEANT TO BE SUSTAINED BY DUTY ALONE. IT WAS MEANT TO BE FUELED BY LOVE.

And the GREATEST TRAGEDY in the Christian life is not falling publicly. It IS DRIFTING QUIETLY.

Is our love for Christ growing or slowly cooling? And if the flame has dimmed, Jesus did not say it was too late. He simply said, "COME BACK".
