Matters of the Heart.

“Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved: for You are my praise.” Jeremiah 17:14

When he was born, our son was perfect—brown-eyed, active, intelligent—and as he grew older, a fine sense of humor developed, which meshed beautifully with his tender sensitivity.

At 13 years of age, however, he developed something else: an annoying cough. Just a little thing that was always worse at high allergy times. I figured it mirrored my own persistent allergies, and I was unconcerned. My husband, however, was very concerned and bundled him off to our family doctor. The cough was allergy-related, but a vital reading was off: his blood pressure! Our young, fit, athletic son had blood pressure way out of the healthy range for any age.

Instead of covering the symptom with drugs, our physician sent us on an odyssey of full-body diagnostics: kidneys, pancreas, lungs, and finally, the heart. The “heart of the matter” wasn’t so much his heart. He had been, unknown to us, born with a coarctation or (narrowing) of the aorta. Usually, this condition is diagnosed at birth, but in the womb, he had developed an impressive network of bypass circulation that had enabled him to live a normal, healthy childhood, unfettered by the debilitating effects of the coarctation. Our only clue? That pesky blood pressure, discovered because of a father’s love.

Placing our son’s life in the hands of an earthly physician was not easy, but the Lord kept bringing the right people at the right time, and everything fell into place to help our son regain his health.

Placing ourselves in the hands of earthly physicians can be frightening. Fear of the unknown, fear of pain, fear of failure…all those play into our reluctance to “trust the system.” However, there’s one system that is completely trustworthy: God, our Great Physician, the One who controls it all, and will not let us down. He who gives peace that passes all understanding will see us through this rough and tumble life. He’s there in the ups when we’re freely praising Him and in the downs when we’re crying out to Him. Freely, we can lay our trust in He who is faithful to complete us! Won’t you trust today?

“Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits: Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases.” Psalm 103:2–3.
