MAKING THE DIFFERENCE WITH THE COURAGE TO SPEAK OUT.

A CITY WAS SECOND'S AWAY FROM DESTRUCTION.
The soldiers were already at the wall. The battering rams were ready. Dust filled the air.
Steel clanged against stone. And inside that city… PEOPLE WERE ABOUT TO DIE FOR A SIN THEY DIDN’T COMMIT.

But then, A WOMAN STEPPED FORWARD. Not a queen. Not a warrior. Not a prophet. Just A WISE WOMAN WITH THE COURAGE TO SPEAK AND EVERYTHING CHANGED.

This moment, recorded in 2 Samuel 20, is ONE OF THE MOST UNDERRATED RESCUE stories.
After the rebellion of Absalom, another rebel rose up in Israel — a man named Sheba son of Bichri. Scripture calls him a “worthless man.” (2 Samuel 20:1)

2 Samuel 20:1 NASB1995
[1] Now A WORTHLESS FELLOW happened to be there whose name was Sheba, the son of Bichri, a Benjamite; and he blew the trumpet and said, “We have no portion in David, Nor do we have inheritance in the son of Jesse; Every man to his tents, O Israel!”

He led a revolt against King David. David sent his commander Joab to hunt him down. The chase ended at a northern city called Abel Beth Maacah. Sheba ran inside the walls. But JOAB DIDN’T COME TO NEGOTIATE. HE CAME TO DESTROY. The army surrounded the city.

They began battering the wall to collapse it. Imagine the terror. Children crying. Families praying. Men preparing to die. ALL BECAUSE ONE GUILTY MAN WAS HIDING AMONG THEM. THIS IS HOW SIN WORKS.
One person rebels and an entire community feels the shockwave. One compromise. One secret. One act of pride. And SUDDENLY THE WALLS OF PEACE START SHAKING. But in the middle of that chaos— A VOICE RISES.

2 Samuel 20:16 NASB1995
[16] Then A WISE WOMAN CALLED . FROM The CITY, “Hear, hear! Please TELL JOAB, ‘COME HERE That I MAY SPEAK WITH YOU.’ ”

NOTICE THE COURAGE. She didn’t whisper. She didn’t panic. SHE DIDN’T STAY SILENT. SHE CALLED THE GENERAL OF ISRAEL’S ARMY TO THE WALL. And when Joab came, SHE SPOKE WORDS THAT CUT THROUGH THE MADNESS.

2 Samuel 20:18-19 NASB1995
[18] Then she spoke, saying, “Formerly they used to say, ‘They will surely ask advice at Abel,’ and thus they ended the dispute. [19] I am of those who are peaceable and faithful in Israel. You are seeking to destroy a city, even a mother in Israel. Why would you swallow up THE INHERITANCE OF THE LORD?”

"THE INHERITANCE OF THE LORD!" She reminded Joab that this city wasn’t just a target. IT BELONGED TO GOD.

THIS WOMAN UNDERSTOOD SOMETHING POWERFUL: GOD’S PEOPLE SHOULD NOT BE DESTROYED CARELESSLY. JOAB IMMEDIATELY RESPONDED:

2 Samuel 20:20-21 NASB1995
[20] Joab replied, “Far be it, far be it from me that I should swallow up or destroy! [21] Such is not the case. But a man from the hill country of Ephraim, Sheba the son of Bichri by name, has lifted up his hand against King David. Only hand him over, and I will depart from the city.” And the woman said to Joab, “Behold, his head will be thrown to you over the wall.”

ONE MAN. That’s all the army wanted. Not the whole city. Just the rebel.

2 Samuel 20:22 NASB1995
[22] Then the woman wisely came to all the people....

SHE DIDN’T JUST SPEAK WELL, SHE LED WELL. She CONVINCED THE CITY to deal with the rebellion inside the walls. They captured Sheba. They threw his head over the wall. THE SIEGE ENDED IMMEDIATELY. The army left. THE CITY LIVED. ALL BECAUSE ONE WOMAN REFUSED TO STAY SILENT. A NAMELESS WOMAN SAVED AN ENTIRE CITY WITH WISDOM. NOT FORCE. NOT POWER. WISDOM.

Many times we are Sheba. The rebel inside the walls. The hidden sin. The pride no one sees. The compromise we think nobody knows. SIN ALWAYS BRINGS DESTRUCTION IF IT REMAINS HIDDEN. It ALWAYS PUTS THE WHOLE HOUSE IN DANGER.

But HERE IS WHERE THE GOSPEL EXPLODES into the story because JESUS DID SOMETHING JOAB DID NOT. JOAB DEMANDED THE REBEL. JESUS BECAME THE SUBSTITUTE. Instead of destroying the city to remove the sinner CHRIST ALLOWED HIMSELF TO BE DESTROYED TO SAVE the sinners.

THE CROSS IS WHERE JUSTICE AND MERCY MEET. OUR REBELLION DESERVED JUDGMENT. But JESUS STEPPED FORWARD. HE TOOK THE PUNISHMENT. HE ABSORBED THE SIEGE. HE CARRIED THE WRATH. SO THE CITY COULD LIVE. THAT’S THE GOSPEL. And IT’S STILL SAVING PEOPLE TODAY.

The wise woman teaches us something powerful. PEACE DOESN’T COME FROM PRETENDING EVIL ISN’T THERE. PEACE COMES WHEN THE REBELLION IS REMOVED. And the only place that can truly happen is at the cross of Jesus Christ.

BRING THE SIN TO HIM. BRING THE REBELLION TO HIM. BRING THE SHAME TO HIM. Because WHEN JESUS FORGIVES, THE SIEGE ENDS, THE WALL STANDS, THE NE E LIVES.

GOD CAN USE ONE COURAGEOUS VOICE TO SAVE A HOUSEHOLD. ONE MOMENT OF REPENTANCE TO RESCUE A family. ONE ACT OF WISDOM TO PROTECT a generation. And sometimes the person God uses most is someone history never even records the name of. But heaven always remembers.
