THE ADVENT TRUTH.

One of the most popular Christian beliefs today, is also one of the least biblical: the idea of the immortal soul.

Let’s start where the Bible starts.

Genesis 2:7
“And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.”

Notice what the verse does not say.
It does NOT say man received a soul.
It does NOT say man possessed a soul.
It says man BECAME a soul.

Biblically speaking:
• Dust + Breath (ruach) = Living soul (nephesh)
Remove either one, and the soul ceases to exist.

* Ezekiel 18:4 — “The soul that sinneth, it shall die.”
An immortal soul cannot die — yet God says souls die.

* Ecclesiastes 9:5–6,10 —
“The dead know not anything… their love, hatred, and envy is now perished… there is no work, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave.”

* Psalm 146:4 —
“His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish.”

The Bible is clear: consciousness ends at death.

So how does Scripture describe death?

Not as floating in heaven.
Not as burning in hell.
But as SLEEP.

* Daniel 12:2 — “Many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake…”
* John 11:11–14 — Jesus said Lazarus was asleep… then clarified: “Lazarus is dead.”
* 1 Thessalonians 4:13–16 — Paul repeatedly calls the dead “them which are asleep.”
* 1 Corinthians 15:51 — “We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed.”

This language isn’t rare — it appears over 60 times across both Testaments.

Why does this matter?

Because the doctrine of the immortal soul:
• Comes from Greek philosophy, not Scripture
• Undermines the resurrection
• Makes the Second Coming unnecessary
• Turns death into a reward instead of an enemy

The Bible teaches this clearly:
Life is a gift (Romans 6:23)
Immortality is something we put on at the resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:51–54)
Jesus alone has immortality right now (1 Timothy 6:16)

The dead are not alive somewhere else.
They are resting, awaiting the voice of Christ.

“And many that sleep… shall awake.”
