TRUE FAITH, AND FALSE FAITH: WHAT SCRIPTURE REVEALS ABOUT BELIEF, EVIDENCE, AND EVOLUTION.

Many Christians like to say, “It takes more faith to believe in evolution than it does to believe in creation.” It sounds sharp, but it only works if we understand what Scripture actually means by faith. The Bible gives us a definition far stronger and more grounded than a simple comparison of worldviews. Hebrews 11:1 tells us that faith is “the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Faith is not a leap into darkness. It rests on a solid foundation because it rests on a faithful God. The Greek behind “substance” describes something firm beneath us, a support that holds us up. True faith is anchored in the character of the God who keeps his promises.

Over and over, Scripture points to God’s faithfulness. Deuteronomy 7:9 declares, “The Lord your God is God, the faithful God.” Hebrews 10:23 says, “He who promised is faithful.” God is true and cannot lie (John 3:33; Titus 1:2). Faith, therefore, is confidence in a God who has revealed himself, spoken truth, and never failed. This is why we believe the gospel. John 3:16 announces that the eternal Son of God became flesh, died for sinners, and rose again to give everlasting life. We do not believe these things because we are gullible. We believe them because the God who promised salvation has proven his faithfulness again and again.

We trust Scripture because its Author is trustworthy. Jesus promised that God’s Word will never pass away (Matthew 24:35). Joshua testified that God has never failed in any of his promises (Joshua 21:45). The apostles affirmed that the message they preached was not human opinion but the very Word of God (1 Thessalonians 2:13). Romans 10:17 reminds us that “faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Biblical faith is rooted in God’s revelation. It stands on fulfilled prophecy, eyewitness testimony, and the written record God has preserved. Our faith is not blind. It is grounded in the God who speaks and the evidence that confirms his Word.

This is why the statement “evolution takes more faith than creation” is actually misleading. Evolution does not require biblical faith at all, because biblical faith must be anchored in a faithful Person. Evolution has no such foundation. It rests on the shifting opinions of fallible people, not on a God who cannot lie. In that sense, evolution requires something different entirely: blind faith. Merriam-Webster defines faith as “firm belief in something for which there is no proof.” That definition fits evolution perfectly. Evolutionary belief depends on assumptions about an unobservable past, theories that constantly change, and a worldview that refuses to consider a Creator. It has no revelation, no absolute authority, and no certainty.

Even leading evolutionists admit that their system is built on chance. Nobel Prize-winning biologist Jacques Monod stated, “Pure chance, absolutely free but blind, is at the very root of evolution.” Yet even simple examples reveal how unreasonable that is. Most people would not believe someone who claimed to flip a coin and get a hundred heads in a row. The probability is so small that we immediately suspect deception. And yet evolution demands far more blind trust than that, claiming that life, DNA, consciousness, morality, and human complexity all emerged from unguided accidents. Blind faith in chance collapses under its own weight.

Creation, on the other hand, does not stand on wishful thinking. It stands on the eyewitness testimony of the Creator and the evidence he placed in creation itself. Romans 1:18–20 says that God’s eternal power and divine nature are clearly seen in the world around us, leaving humanity without excuse. From the stunning design of the human body to the fine-tuned order of the universe, from the information in DNA to the beauty of living systems, creation testifies to a purposeful Designer, not to blind randomness.

So the next time someone says, “It takes more faith to believe in evolution,” remember this: evolution does not qualify for biblical faith at all. It is blind belief in speculation. Biblical faith rests on the trustworthy God who reveals himself in Scripture, in history, and in creation. And Scripture commands us to defend this hope with boldness and humility. “Always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you” (1 Peter 3:15).

True faith is grounded, reasonable, and anchored in the God who cannot lie. Blind faith belongs to those who trust in chance instead of the Creator.
