Then Jonathan Saul's son arose and went to David in the woods and strengthened his hand in God

Strength in the Middle of Pressure

1 Samuel chapter 23 shows David continuing to live under constant pressure as Saul relentlessly pursued him. Yet even in this season of danger, David remained committed to seeking the Lord.

When the city of Keilah was attacked by the Philistines, David did not act impulsively. Instead, he inquired of the Lord. Even after receiving confirmation, he sought the Lord again to be sure. This shows David’s dependence on God for direction rather than relying on his own instincts.

God gave David victory over the Philistines, but the danger was not over. Saul heard that David was in Keilah and planned to surround the city. Once again, David sought the Lord and discovered that even the people he had just saved would hand him over to Saul. So David fled, continuing his life on the run.

In the midst of this pressure, Jonathan came to David and strengthened his hand in God. This moment is powerful. Jonathan did not just offer encouragement with words. He pointed David back to God’s promises, reminding him that God’s plan would stand.

David’s strength was not found in his circumstances, which were unstable and threatening. His strength was found in the Lord.

This chapter teaches that even when we are walking in obedience, life can still be difficult. Doing the right thing does not always lead to immediate safety or comfort. Yet God remains faithful to guide, protect, and strengthen His people.

For believers today, 1 Samuel 23 reminds us to seek God for direction in every situation. It also shows the importance of godly encouragement. When we are weak, God often uses others to strengthen our faith and remind us of His promises.

Reflection Questions

2. How do I respond when doing the right thing leads to difficulty

3. Who in my life helps strengthen my faith and how can I do the same for others

Prayer

Lord God thank You that You are my strength in every situation. Help me to seek You for guidance in all that I do. When I feel overwhelmed or discouraged, remind me of Your promises. Surround me with people who will strengthen my faith, and use me to encourage others in their walk with You. In Jesus name Amen.
