TITLE: The Power of Words, Seeds, and Seasons
Main Scriptures
Proverbs 18:21 - “Death and life are in the power of the tongue…”
Mark 4:26-28 - the kingdom like seed that grows over time
Ecclesiastes 3:1 - “To everything there is a season…”
Hebrews 4:12 - “The word of God is living and powerful…”
INTRODUCTION
Something I have been seeing more clearly now that I am a parent is this: words are not just words. The Word of God is alive, and because God’s Word is alive, our words are not empty either.
Many believers say they believe the Word, but they do not always understand the power, the authority, and the weight of words. We speak casually, but heaven does not treat words casually. Words carry direction. Words carry influence. Words carry seed.
That is why when parents speak over their children, those words can stay in a child’s life for years. A parent may say, “You will never be successful,” or “You always fail,” or “You are not smart,” or “You will never finish school.” At the time, it may just sound like anger, frustration, or a passing moment. But in the spirit, it can become a seed.
And seed does not grow overnight.
A tree does not appear the same day the seed is planted. It takes time. It goes through seasons. Some things grow in spring. Some things flourish in summer. Some things look hidden for a long time before they show up above the ground.
That is how words work.
That is how seed works.
That is how seasons work.
WORDS ARE SEEDS
The Bible teaches us that words are powerful.
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue…” - Proverbs 18:21
That means what we speak can build, and what we speak can destroy. What we bless can grow. What we curse can wound.
Jesus also said:
“A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things…” - Matthew 12:35
That means words come from the heart, and the heart becomes the source of what eventually shows up in life.
So when a parent speaks negative words over a child, that is not just talking. That is sowing. And when a seed is sown, it begins working beneath the surface before you ever see the fruit.
WHAT IS SPOKEN TODAY MAY MANIFEST YEARS LATER
This is why some people struggle with things they cannot explain.
They say: “Why do I think like this?” “Why do I keep doubting myself?” “Why do I feel like I will fail?” “Why do I always expect rejection?” “Why do I not believe I can become anything?”
Sometimes the answer is not just circumstances. Sometimes the answer is seed.
A word spoken 20 years ago may still be producing fruit today. A lie planted in childhood may show up in adulthood as fear, insecurity, failure, shame, or self-sabotage.
That is why we must not treat words lightly.
SEED NEEDS TIME, AND TIME HAS SEASONS
Jesus taught in Mark 4 that the kingdom of God is like seed.
“First the blade, then the head, after that the full grain in the head.” - Mark 4:28
That is growth language. That is process language. That is season language.
“To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven.” - Ecclesiastes 3:1
Not everything happens immediately. Some things take time to reveal. Some things are planted in one season and only become visible in another season.
That is why people get confused. They think because they do not see the fruit now, nothing was planted. But seed can be underground for a while before it shows above the surface.
The same is true for words.
PARENTS ARE SOWERS
Now that I am a parent, I understand even more clearly that what we say to our children matters deeply.
A parent is not just raising a child. A parent is sowing into a future.
When you speak to your child, you are not only addressing the present version of them. You are shaping the future version of them.
That is why Scripture says:
“And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.” - Ephesians 6:4
That means our words must train, not destroy.
Our words must correct, not crush.
Our words must guide, not wound.
Parents must be careful not to plant identity-destroying words into the hearts of their children.
NEGATIVE WORDS CAN BECOME INTERNAL STRONGHOLDS
This is where the battle becomes real.
When a child hears words like: “You are useless.”
“You are stupid.”
“You will never amount to anything.”
“You are always a failure.”
those words can become internal voices.
Later in life, even when nobody is speaking, the person may still hear those words inside. That is how lies become strongholds.
“Casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God…” - 2 Corinthians 10:5
Some people do not need new information first. They need old lies broken.
Some people are not struggling because they lack ability. They are struggling because they have been speaking against themselves with words that were planted into them long ago.
GOD’S WORD IS THE RIGHT SEED
The good news is this: if wrong words can be planted, right words can also be planted.
God’s Word is seed too.
“For as the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven… so shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; it shall not return to Me void…” - Isaiah 55:10-11
God’s Word is not dead information. It is living seed. It carries life. It carries truth. It carries healing. It carries direction. It carries restoration.
That is why we must speak God’s Word over our children, over our homes, over our marriages, over our minds, and over our future.
If the enemy uses words to destroy, then God uses words to restore.
THE TONGUE CAN CURSE OR BLESS
James says:
“With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men… Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so.” - James 3:9-10
Believers must stop using their mouths carelessly.
We cannot say we trust God and then speak death over our own lives. We cannot say we believe in destiny and then speak failure over our children. We cannot say we love people and then tear them down with our mouths.
If we want fruit, we must plant life.
If we want harvest, we must sow truth.
WHAT PARENTS SHOULD SPEAK
Parents should not only correct their children. They should cover their children with life-giving words.
Speak identity: “You are valuable.” “You are called.” “You are not a mistake.” “You can do great things.” “God has a plan for your life.”
Speak faith: “God will help you.” “You can finish what you started.” “The Lord will guide you.” “You will grow in wisdom.”
Speak truth: “You are loved.” “You are seen.” “You are not alone.” “You belong to God.”
Those words become seeds too.
And seeds of life also take time. They may not show instantly, but they will bear fruit in the right season.
SOME PEOPLE NEED TO BREAK AGREEMENT WITH OLD WORDS
Some of us are still carrying words we heard growing up.
But if those words are not from God, they do not have to remain over your life.
You can break agreement with them.
You can reject them.
You can renounce them.
You can replace them with the truth of God’s Word.
“You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” - John 8:32
The truth is not just something you read. The truth is something you live under.
If God says you are accepted, do not live like you are rejected.
If God says you are chosen, do not live like you are forgotten.
If God says you are called, do not live like you are pointless.
THE KINGDOM PRINCIPLE
Here is the Kingdom principle:
Words are seeds.
Seeds take time.
Time has seasons.
Seasons reveal harvest.
That means what you speak today may not show tomorrow, but it will show.
So we must be wise.
Be careful what you speak over your spouse.
Be careful what you speak over your children.
Be careful what you speak over your future.
Be careful what you speak over yourself.
Because words are not just air.
Words are not just noise.
Words are seeds.
PRAYER
Father, in the name of Jesus, forgive us for every careless word, every negative word, every destructive word, and every lie that we have agreed with.
We break the power of wrong words spoken over our lives, over our children, and over our future.
We reject every label that is not from You.
We reject every curse that is not from You.
We reject every seed of fear, failure, shame, and defeat.
And we receive Your Word as truth.
Let life grow where death was spoken.
Let faith grow where fear was planted.
Let identity grow where confusion was planted.
Let victory grow where defeat was planted.
Teach us to speak like people who understand the power of the tongue.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
CLOSING DECLARATION
Words are seeds.
Seeds take time.
And what is planted today will shape tomorrow.
So speak life.
Speak truth.
Speak faith.
Speak blessing.
Because the harvest will come.
