THREE ANGELS BROADCASTING NETWORK DEVOTIONAL.
A Metaphor and a Mentor.

Many decades ago, we were confined in a dark room. We’d been there so long it had actually become quite comfortable. The room was very, very dark. It was nearly impossible for me to see who I truly was or see the others who lived in this room with me. They were wandering shadows in the night, but we could hear each other clearly.

Sadly, the many conversations in this room had little truth—and no light. The intent of our words was merely to comfort each other about how satisfying the darkness was. Satisfying because we couldn’t truly see the other’s shame—nor our own.

In this room, there was no sunshine, no breeze, no rain, and no roses. There was no joy, just inner lament. We were all dulled and sedated by the endless darkness, and our inner shame was hidden.

Then, one day, someone knocked on the door, and everyone shouted, “Don’t open the door! We don’t know who it is!”

But being young, I was bold and asked, “Who is it?“

The answer came back, “I Am the Son of your Father. I am your kindred brother.”

Everyone in the room cried out, “He’s a liar! Don’t let him in!” But my childlike curiosity got the best of me, and I made my way to the door.

Many of them tried to block my path, but they were merely shadows, so they were unable to stop me. Some laughed at me as I reached for the door. The others mocked me, teased me, and berated me.

One of the shadows was called Addiction, he grabbed a hold of me and pulled me back, hard. Discouraged, I returned to my place in the center of the room, and with my back to the door, I sat down.

Then, another knock. Frustrated and ashamed, I asked myself, Why did He have to knock again?

Others in the room cried out in unison, “Leave us alone in our comfort zone!” I said nothing at all at first, but I stared over my shoulder towards the door. Then, from somewhere within my heart, the words came, and I quietly whispered, “Come in.”

The other ones in the darkroom hissed as the door swung open and the Light blared in. Many covered their eyes. Others scurried away to the corners. The Light of Truth stood in the open doorway, and at first, the brightness was very painful and not at all pleasant. But as I squinted, my eyes slowly adjusted, and I began to see.

A man in a white robe stood there, and through the doorway, I saw a world beyond Him I’d never seen before. I squinted some more, raising a hand to shade my eyes as I moved towards Him. The delightful songs of birds and the sweet fragrance of flowers wafted in as the others continued to hiss and spit the words, “Close that door!”

I slowed my pace near the entrance, but the man at the door reached out His hand. Encouraged, I continued forward and took it. He led me out of the darkroom into the light of a beautiful world—a world I could never have imagined, bright and fabulous. There was so much love there.

As He closed the door behind us, the hissing stopped, and a new journey began - a journey with my Brother, my Friend, my Savior named Jesus. We stood on a golden path in a field of yellow roses, and He gave me a white garment to wear.

“What about those who remained in the room?” I asked.

“There was no one else in that room,” Jesus answered. “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. Those who seek Me will find Me.”

Confused, I looked back and realized the door was gone forever.

“I will always answer a plea,” Jesus said, and then He instructed me, through His written Word, to never take my eyes off of Him as we journeyed to the Promised Land.

“Most assuredly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep…. I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.” John 10:7, 9.

“Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.” Revelation 3:20.
