LESSON: MATTHEW 21: 6-11
TOPIC:
āHOSANNA TODAY⦠CRUCIFY TOMORROWā
TEXT:
Then the multitudes who went before and those who followed cried out, saying: āHosanna to the Son of David! āBlessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!ā Hosanna in the highest!ā Matthew 21:9 (NKJV)
INTRODUCTION
Palm Sunday is one of those moments in Scripture that feels almost contradictory. A King is enteringā¦
yet not the kind people expected. A crowd is shouting⦠yet not with full understanding. There is celebrationā¦
but suffering is already in motion. In Matthew 21:9,
the people cried, āHosanna to the Son of David!ā They spread garments, waved palm branches, and honored Jesus as King. But if you look closely⦠something is off.
Their praise was loud⦠but their hearts were shallow.
Their excitement was real⦠but their understanding was limited. And maybe⦠just maybe⦠this is not just about them. It reflects something we still see today
EXPOSITION:
[1]. THE MISUNDERSTOOD KING
Text: Matthew 21:5
Jesus entered Jerusalem riding on a donkey.
Not in power display⦠but in humility.
This was a fulfillment of prophecy⦠but the people missed the meaning. They expected:
A political deliverer. A warrior king
Someone to overthrow oppression
But Jesus came to deal with something deeper⦠sin, not systems. Sometimes, people celebrate what they think God is doing⦠Not what He is actually doing.
Even in ministry today: People applaud miracles, but resist transformation They love blessings, but avoid surrender. Jesus was celebrated⦠but not truly received.
And that is dangerous. Because it is possible to be around Jesus⦠and still miss Him.
[2]. THE VOICE OF THE CROWD IS UNSTABLE
The account of Matthew 27:22 reads... Pilate said to them, āWhat then shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?ā They all said to him, āLet Him be crucified!ā
Just days later⦠the same voices changed.
From āHosannaā to āCrucify Him.ā
No long explanation. No gradual shift. Just⦠a turn.
Honestly, that says a lot about human nature.
The crowd is: Emotional. Influenced. Unstable.
If your identity is tied to peopleās approval⦠you will rise and fall with their opinions. Jesus did not slow down when they praised Him. And He did not stop when they rejected Him. Why? Because His assignment was not crowd-controlled. Maybe thatās a word for someone listening: Seek crown not crowd
Donāt build your life on applause.
Donāt measure your calling by acceptance.
People change, but, God does not.
[3]. STAY TRUE, EVEN WHEN PRAISE TURNS
The book of Hebrews chapter 12 verse 2 says:
Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Jesus knew what was ahead.
He knew the cheers would fade.
He knew the cross was coming.
Still⦠He moved forward.
Thatās not normal strength. Thatās purpose.
The Bible says He endured the cross, despising the shame, because of the joy set before Him.
That means: He saw beyond the moment
He focused beyond the pain
He stayed aligned with Godās will
In your own life, there will be moments when:
Support disappears. Understanding is lacking
Pressure increases. But purpose does not change because people do. Staying true to God is not always comfortableā¦. But it is always necessary.
CONCLUSION:
LESSON DERIVED FROM PALM SUNDAY!
Palm Sunday teaches us something quiet, but very powerful. Not all praise is proof of loyalty.
Some people will celebrate you⦠but not stand with you.
Some will shout your name⦠but not carry your burden.
And thatās alright. Because your calling is not to be accepted by everyone⦠It is to be faithful to God.
Jesus did not come to win the crowd, but the Crown
He came to fulfill the mission. And because He stayed the course⦠salvation became available to all.
So the real question is not: āAre people clapping for me?ā
But: āAm I aligned with Godā¦
even when the clapping stops?ā
GOODWILL MESSAGE
May this week open your eyes to the truth,
strengthen your walk with God, and align your
heart with His purpose. You will not be distracted.
CLOSING PRAYER (2:06 ā 2:25)
āLet us prayā¦
Father, in the name of Jesusā¦
give us the grace to remain steadfast.
When people change⦠let our faith not change.
When pressure rises⦠let our purpose remain strong.
Let Your word bear fruit in our livesā¦
and let it never stand against us.
In Jesusā mighty name⦠Amen.ā
JESUS IS COMING BACK AGAIN, BE READY FOR HIM.
