What’s in a name?
Names are not casual in the Kingdom of God. They are not random sounds we assign to distinguish one person from another. A name carries weight. It speaks of identity, purpose, and nature. It anchors us to belonging family, history, covenant.
That is why the Bible is filled with genealogies. Not to bore us, but to remind us God knows every name. Every life is seen, accounted for, and woven into His redemptive story.
In Scripture, names often reveal truth. Nabal means fool and he lived it out. Abram becomes Abraham, Sarai becomes Sarah, Jacob becomes Israel. When God changes a name, He is not just renaming a person He is redefining their identity and calling.
And then there is God Himself.
He reveals His nature through His names not because He needs definition, but because we do.
Elohim – Creator
Yahweh – I AM
El Shaddai – Almighty
Jehovah-Jireh – Provider
Jehovah-Rapha – Healer
Jehovah-Shalom – Peace
Each name is an invitation this is who I am to you.
But then everything culminates in one name.
“Therefore God has highly exalted Him and given Him the name above every name”
The name above every name is Jesus.
Not just a name but the fullness of God revealed, the embodiment of salvation, authority, and victory. At this name, heaven responds, hell trembles, and every knee will bow.
This is not poetic language it is absolute reality.
“There is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
The name of Jesus is not one option among many it is the only name that carries the power to save, to redeem, to restore, and to transform.
And here is the weight of it:
We don’t just speak His name we carry it.
To be called Christian is to bear His name. His identity becomes our identity. His righteousness becomes our covering. His authority becomes our inheritance.
So the question is no longer just, “What’s in a name?”
The question becomes:
Do we understand the name we carry?
Do we live in the authority of that name?
Do we honour it with the way we live?
