Sermon: “Behold the Lamb”

There is something powerful about the word “Behold.”

It’s not just “look.” It’s pause… see… understand.

When John the Baptist said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world,” he wasn’t just pointing at a man—he was revealing a truth that would change everything.

The people standing there that day didn’t fully understand.

They saw Jesus… but they didn’t yet see the weight He carried, the purpose He walked in, or the love that would lead Him to the cross.

And yet, heaven already knew.

The Lamb had come.

Not to condemn.

Not to take power.

But to carry what we could never carry ourselves.

Every image you’ve just created tells that story:

• The pointing finger of John — recognition

• The Lamb beside Him — innocence and sacrifice

• The burden on His shoulders — our sin, our shame, our brokenness

• The crowd transformed — grace reaching every heart

• The heavens opening — God’s full approval

This is the Gospel in motion.

Jesus didn’t wait for us to clean ourselves up.

He didn’t stand at a distance and demand perfection.

He walked toward us, carrying what was ours… so we could receive what is His.

Peace.

Freedom.

New life.

And here’s the deeper truth:

The same light that touched that crowd…

The same presence that shifted sorrow into peace…

is still reaching people today.

Including you.

So the question isn’t just, “Do you see Him?”

The question is:

Will you behold Him?

Will you truly see Him for who He is—

not just a figure in a story,

but the Lamb who came for you?

Because when you do… everything changes.

Prayer

Lord Jesus,

You are the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.

And today… we pause.

We behold You.

We see the weight You carried—

not just in history, but for us personally.

Every burden, every failure, every hidden pain…

You took it upon Yourself in love.

Thank You for not turning away.

Thank You for walking toward us.

Lord, let Your light reach every place in our hearts that still feels heavy.

Where there is sorrow, bring peace.

Where there is shame, bring freedom.

Where there is confusion, bring clarity.

Help us not just to see You…

but to truly know You.

Teach us to walk in the freedom You purchased.

Teach us to rest in the grace You freely give.

And just like the crowd in that field,

let our hearts be transformed in Your presence.

We receive You, Jesus—

as Savior, as Redeemer, as the Lamb of God.
