The Knott of Terrible Problems

“Call to Me, and I will answer you.” Jeremiah 33:3

I was raised by my aunt, but called her mother all my life. Although she didn't have children of her own, she gave me all her free time and all her love. She also believed in God, and although there was no church nearby, we had regular prayer meetings in our Russian village each week in the home of a dear little grandmother.

Things changed when I moved to the big city, though. I plunged headlong into a worldly life and only remembered God when things got tough. I used Him as an "ambulance" more than the Almighty God He is!

After my daughter's birth, serious problems began when we both became quite ill, and Mom was diagnosed with stage IV cancer. The doctors told me she'd die soon, and I was so exhausted from the pain in my chest that I couldn't walk. My child was dying right before my eyes, and I was horrified that I wouldn't be able to bury my mother in her homeland, as she had requested. I just kept whispering the prayer, "Lord, help me!"

Anticipating her death, I asked everyone I knew if they could take care of my child for a few days while I buried my Mom, but everyone was busy. I even asked my biological mother, but she refused. I had another aunt—a very wealthy one—who lived in Moscow. But since I'd never spoken to her, I was too embarrassed to call and ask.

Then something strange happened. My neighbor, Rita, had a friend named Masha in Moscow. And when Masha attended a birthday party, someone asked her, "So how's Rita?"

"Oh, she's doing fine," she said, "but her neighbor, Tamara, is in a tough situation."

As it turned out, the woman she was talking to was my wealthy aunt! And when she found out what I was facing, she immediately came to help me, although we'd never met! What are the odds that my name would come up at a birthday party in a city the size of Moscow? No doubt, God answered my prayer.

When she arrived, I was in terrible pain, and my child was in a grave condition, so she quickly arranged for my operation and called an ambulance to take my daughter to the Children's Hospital. When my mother died, she stayed with my daughter while I traveled to her funeral in her hometown, fulfilling her last wish in a dignified way. Thankfully, my daughter and I recovered, and I still marvel at how God untangled that tight knot of terrible problems!
