In the book of John, the garden becomes a battlefield, yet not the kind men expect.
Judas arrived with a "band of men", armed with swords and staves, with lanterns and torches cutting through the night (John 18:3).
The Greek word there is โspeiraโ, which is a Roman cohort.
A full Roman cohort is about 200 - 600 soldiers. Including, temple officers, servants of the chief priests and Pharisees.
Why so many? Because they expected Resistance, Possible uprising, A confrontation. They came prepared for a riot-level arrest, as if Jesus were a dangerous rebel.
It is the language of force, the posture of control, the confidence of men. But the text confronts us immediately,
John 18:4 NASB1995
[4] So Jesus, knowing all the things that were coming upon Him, went forth and *said to them, โWhom do you seek?โ
He does not hide. He advances. โWhom do you seek?โ โJesus of Nazareth.โ โI AM HE.โ
At that declaration, the armed men collapse. They go backward and fall to the ground
John 18:6 NASB1995
[6] So when He said to them, โI am He,โ they drew back and fell to the ground.
ONE VOICE, NO WEAPON, AND HUMAN STRENGTH IS UNDONE. THIS IS SOVEREIGN AUTHORITY UNVEILED IN A SINGLE SENTENCE.
And yet, HE REMAINS. No retreat. No resistance. No summons of angels. The One who can unmake them with a word chooses instead to SUBMIT HIMSELF TO THEIR HANDS.
They came prepared for a fight. Christ came prepared for the cross. Even their lanterns preach against them, they bring borrowed light to arrest the Light of the world.
They see Him, yet do not know Him. They bind Him, yet cannot stop Him. For this moment is not seized by men, it was orchestrated by God.
"HE WAS NOT TAKEN". "HE GAVE HIMSELF".
And here, we still live like that band of men, armed with control, driven by self-will. But redemption was not accomplished by force. It was accomplished by surrender.
