Sermon: The King Who Serves

Author: Will Helton

In Gospel of Matthew 20:28, Jesus gives us a truth that turns the world upside down:

“The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”

Every image you’ve just created tells that story.

We see Him kneeling—washing feet that walked dusty roads.

Not demanding honor… but choosing humility.

We see Him walking at sunrise—carrying a burden that wasn’t His own.

Not resisting the weight… but embracing it for us.

We see Him sitting among the broken—touching the hurting, lifting the weary.

Not avoiding pain… but stepping directly into it with compassion.

We see the hill with the crosses—where love was not spoken, but proven.

Not taking life… but giving His.

And finally, we see Him holding the crown—choosing not to wear it.

Because His kingdom is not built on power… but on service.

This is the heart of Jesus.

In a world that says, “Climb higher, be greater, be served,”

Jesus says, “Kneel lower, love deeper, serve others.”

True greatness in the Kingdom of God is not found in status—

it’s found in surrender.

Not in being lifted up—

but in lifting others up.

And here’s the beautiful part:

Jesus didn’t just show us how to live—He made a way for us to be changed.

Because the same love that led Him to serve…

now lives in us.

So the question becomes:

Where is God calling you to serve?

Maybe it’s in patience when it’s hard.

Maybe it’s in kindness when it’s not returned.

Maybe it’s in showing up for someone who feels forgotten.

Every small act of love… reflects the heart of the King.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for sending Jesus—

not as a king who demands, but as a Savior who serves.

Thank You for His humility,

His compassion,

and His willingness to give His life for us.

Lord, shape our hearts to be like His.

Teach us to serve when it’s inconvenient.

To love when it’s difficult.

To give without expecting anything in return.

Help us to see people the way You see them—

not as burdens, but as souls deeply loved by You.

Take our pride, our selfishness, and our fear,

and replace them with humility, generosity, and courage.

Jesus, You carried what we could never carry.

Now help us carry Your love into the world.

Let our lives reflect Your light,

so that through us, others may feel Your peace,

Your mercy,

and Your presence.

We surrender our hearts to You.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.
