Through the Waters.

“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.” Isaiah 43:2 (NIV)

Daddy and I had just picked up a load from the seed store and were headed back to our farm on a bumpy, red-clay caliche road. Suddenly, a powerful thunderstorm swept in and the winds buffeted us. The skies blackened with ominous, swirling clouds. The radio announcer blurted out an urgent warning: life-threatening weather was upon us. Pretty scary stuff for a seven-year-old.

Pulling over, Daddy flung the door open, and hit the ground running. He barked out orders for my assistance to help him tarp down the bobtail truck bed to protect our seed from getting soaked. Just as we secured our load, the sky broke open. Dripping wet, we climbed back into the truck.

Our windshield wipers flapped furiously, but we still couldn’t see the road through the torrents of rain. Rather than slowing down, Daddy sped up. The truck began to swerve back and forth on the slick red clay.

“Hold on,” Daddy shouted above the thunder, pelting rain, and howling winds, “we’re just about a mile away from Mud Creek.”

Mud Creek was a wide river, but normally fairly shallow. We usually crossed it without a problem, when we took the “back road” to town. Today would be different.

Trying to appear calm, Daddy slowed the truck when we reached a distance of fifty yards from Mud Creek. Alarmed by what he saw, he came to a complete stop. The deluge had already caused churning, muddy waters to rise about 18 inches.

“What are we going to do, Daddy?”

“Well, I think we can get across, if we just keep going without stopping.”

“Daddy, I’m praying!” I tried to be brave, but it was fearful.

“Good, son. Keep praying!” And with that, Daddy accelerated, and through the waters we went.

I prayed, believing God would hear—but with one eye open, not knowing what His response would be. Soon the waters were up to the floorboard. Although Daddy’s foot was heavy on the accelerator, the truck merely crawled forward against the rushing currents. In what seemed like an eternity we finally reached the bank, and with a full-throttle acceleration, the truck emerged—slipping and sliding—on the other side. Whew! Only five more miles to the farm, and a shelter from the storm.

My father made a risky decision that day. Only by the grace of God did we make it across. I believe God answered the earnest prayers of a frightened child, but I also recognize there is a difference between faith and presumption.

Today, when I have the option to avoid stormy waters I do my best to “Turn around—don’t drown!” However, sometimes I can’t avoid life’s storms and find myself in a tempestuous situation. When that happens, I pray earnestly and trust the Lord is always faithful to His promises. He passes through the waters with me.
