It is easy to believe God loves us when we live right, but few people believe God loves us when we don't. First John 2:1 says, “My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not.”
It is pretty obvious that God does not want us to sin or practice sin because He knows the way of the transgressor is hard (Proverbs 13:15).
If we continue in 1 John 2:1, it says, “And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.”
It does not say that when we sin God judges or punishes us. It does not say Jesus will accuse us. It says when we sin, Jesus is still our advocate. An advocate is one who is for you, not against you! Even when you sin, Jesus is still for you! He's not the one who condemns you. He's the one who helps you come out of sin and overcome it. The feelings of condemnation and expectations of judgment are not from Him. Fear can modify your behavior, but only love can change your heart. Jesus, your advocate, reminds you that over 2000 years ago, your case was settled, and you are not guilty. True freedom is knowing and believing in the love God has for you!
“Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world” (1 John 4:17). Today you are as He is!
